Travels with Kerri On and crew

George, Jolee & know exactly what you & Carolyn are experiencing. It's bad enough at home or in a motel, but on a 22 foot C-Dory pure hell. We went through it on the tail end of our 2010 trip while boater camping on the way home. Neither of us had been so sick in a very long time. Uncontrollable vomiting & diarrhea sometimes at the same time. Even though the main effects were short term it took several months getting totally back. A reoccurrence of it while on the boat is one of our biggest fears while cruising.

Sure hope you both get back to feeling well soon,

Jay

Hi George,

Sorry to hear you both got that bug. We have had the upper-respiratory bug around here which does not sound as bad. I have heard of a couple people with similar flue so hope we don't get that one.

I have also been in the Coronado hospital. When you are sick, it is so nice when the hospital and staff make things easier for you.

Hope you both get well soon,
Steve

When I went on a trip with the Boy Scouts about 10-11 year ago, the whole group of us came down with Norwalk virus at Philmont. We had to delay our 50 mile hike and cut the front end of it short by a couple of days. While the illness only lasted a couple of days, it was a couple of the worst days I've had in my entire life. Glad that you're over it and on to better times!

Thanks guys, Yes we're doing great. Jay I would really not want to deal with the flu or anything else while on the road. Folks asked us all the time "what if you get sick? No house? We always figured if we were on the road we'd grab a cheap motel for a few days till we felt better. Cruising generally makes one more healthy I've noticed....but every once in a while. wham. But now having done it at least in a warm place in a nice marina, I was not tempted to get a motel. Since filling the berth across the back and adding a full size 3 " foam mattress, that bunk is THE most comfortable boat bunk I have ever had. We directed the little 110v heater toward the bunk and threw in 2 hot water bottles and slept. It was so nice to have all our stuff right at hand. Prescriptions, kleenex hot water etc. The inconvenience of spending a couple days ashore didn't cross my mind. We have to eat a pretty bland diet for a few days but we usually do anyway so it's not too bad. Merry Christmas everyone!! George and Carolyn.

George and Carolyn,

Howdy and Merry Christmas from Sequim. Sorry to hear about the "bug". Being sick when traveling is almost as bad as it gets. Hope you continue to improve and that health and happiness fill your days. Have a good time, and maybe lay off the 5 star Thai food for a week or so.

Enjoy and wishing you all the best.

Thanks all. We're doing well. Night before last we finished dinner to candlelight and had some light jazz carols on the stereo. I asked Carolyn if she'd like to dance. "sure". There is lots of room unless you wanna jive. Keep it slow. So we were dancing on the dance floor of Kerri On and the little boat was swaying and a group went up the ramp which was right next door. They yelled something so we went out. The were visiting on a searay 34 and just wanted to let us know they'd looked over our boat earlier and loved it. Charming cute boat I think. We handed out a c dory brochure as they are ready to simplify their boating. One issue is the fellow is 6'6" so high top for sure needed. Nice folks. They loved the no nonsense lines and obvious liveabilty. Merry christmas all. G and C

:thup :thup :hug :love :hug2 :rose :rose :rose

All the best

Just a quick note we're in a nutty crazy mcdonalds!!! Lots of boating since last note. Now in Apache Junction east of Phoenix. Spent 4 days on the Salt River near Morman Flat dam on Canyon lake. Gorgeous!!!!! They call it a mini Grand Canyon.. It is very nice. Steep canyons, quite little coves, flat water. We spent about 8 hours over 4 days at 3 knots or less looking for sheep and deer. Saw lots of herons, shorebirds and squirells but no sheep or deer. We spent one night on the beach close to the launch ramp and it was calm and warm. One night on the hook in a small cove past the first water bridge. One night on the hook again near the ramp and had to move over to the dock as the wind clocked around to 25 knots with 2 foot whitecaps. At dusk I had noticed dark clouds on the horizon, coupled with high mares tails during the day, the weather was changing. I had made plans as to what to do to retreat if the wide arose as our anchorage was exposed. My feeling at 0130 was hmmmm there is a 15 knot wind, that is different than the flat calms of previous night. So I flashed up and got the anchor up. And moved over to the courtesy dock. Within an hour the real wind showed up and we were snug on the lee side of the dock. The spot light revealed nasty whitecaps going by. As we we planning to haul out in the morning, I made plans to go to the marina and use thier ramp. But by 0500 the flat calm was back. And with it some cold air! It went from 55 F overnight down to 40F. We totally enjoyed our time on the lake including the blow, as I was able to use old time weather forecasting, as the vhf of course had nothing. Always keep a weather eye aloft. Three items I really value aboard now, a good windlass V700 and an oversize 22 lb claw anchor and a good handheld spot light. Canyon lake is home to the Dolly "steamboat" tours and they do a brisk business on this pretty lake. We spent one lunch hour tied to reeds in a small cove, the stillness was absolute. The Salt River has several dams making for a mini Colorado experience. Similar yet different to lake Powell. More soon, heading for the Sedona area next. Oh by the way, we stayed 4 nights now at the Lost Dutchman state park. What a great park. Do come down and enjoy. It's clean, very pretty and has a lot of trails and info about the Sonoran desert and wildlife. More soon, George and Carolyn

Hi George,

Thanks for the update, love reading about your adventures. Been busy here doing a daffodil count in the garden. Say hi to Carolyn for us.

Martin & Andrea.

Martin. I think you need to prioritize! Let's see, Boating in the Warm South West - Counting Daffodils! Boating - Daffodils! Just sayin'

Today ain't warm! We had almost 80F on Friday and peaking at 46F today. Cold air from Canada? Hmmm. Keep it up there. We took a break today with more cold for the next couple of days. We've been on the road/water continuously since Oct 28. About 14 weeks so far and were going to run up to the Cottonwood area where our buddy Casey and Mary (Katmai) have a home. However it's predicted to be in the high 20's for a couple days overnight lows so we spoiled ourselves and got a Best Western for a break overnight! We toured town and the rv parks are full, we got another one never had a boat before and couldn't make a decision to let us in so we said ciao baby. The Lost Dutchman was sweet but full. We were getting late on running to Scottsdale so Carolyn said "how 'bout that Best Western?" We'll splurge tonight then stealth camp a couple nights till it gets normal on temps. We always figured we'd get a B&B or motel once in a while to break it up. Carolyn has done great aboard and 14 weeks is quite a while. We'll get up to the Cottonwood area and use that as a base to tour the beautiful Sedona area. Aiming for first week in March in Lake Powell. One thing too as I always do a couple walk arounds daily to look at tires wheels, straps etc, I noticed a slice in one tire that was not there earlier. it was parallel to the rim and a couple inches long, not thru the wall but I swapped it for the spare. much better to do it in a park than on an interstate. It may have happened coming in from Canyon lake. that is a twisty road. Talk soon George and Carolyn

We have been at rv1 in Lake Montezuma now for a couple weeks. Doing a ton of sight seeing local historical sights, like Jerome the mile high city overlooking the Verde valley. A whole day spent just touring the shops and eateries, marvelous place it feels like it wants to slide off the mountain, and it does a bit sometimes. Gorgeous red rock country around Sedona, just amazing structure. We just got in from a 3 day trip to Williams AZ, and the Grand Canyon hotel and railway, over the top of the plateau from Flagstaff. . What a deal. They do an off season 3 day 2 night stay with 2 dinners and 2 breakfasts including coach class for 2 on their train to the south rim and a motor coach tour with guide on the rim for $450! Salt water pool at the hotel and old west charm of route 66 in Williams, the last town bypassed by hwy 40 , absolutely a great time. The GC this time of year is short on tourists and the clear air made the colours and detail of the canyon shine. Light winds made the cool air bearable for our times outside the coach and walking about. Even with the lack of numbers up there, we were surprised at the numbers of folks who go past the rock barriers to dangle feet over the abyss. Nutty behavior, it is an aweful long way down. At Hopi viewpoint there is a big sign saying do not pass this point as several deaths have occured. Right beside the sign a gal was shooting her camera down the wall, as she sat knees over the edge!! The whole thing has fractured rock back at the wall and you won't see me out there. The whole place although staggering makes me wish I had wings with me. :smiled Darn cold overnights though. I drained Kerri On's water system prior to leaving for the Canyon as we had slow moving water on the morning of the 25th. Got down to 18F here in Lake Montezuma, I though it only 31 so wondered at the frozen water line until the sun warmed things up. But it was actually 18F, yikes. Comfy aboard, with the right blankies. Warming trend, right now.

Time to get on the road again. Going in for a bit of truck maintenance tomorrow and then laundy and grocery shopping Saturday for the short hop to Page AZ and Wahweap marina. We plan on Sunday departing rv1 at Casey and Mary's (Katmai) and work up to Page on the detour past the slipped hwy 89. Probably overnight in Tuba City and arrive Monday in Page. Any c brats about please join us on the water. We plan a run to Oak Canyon and Rainbow bridge in a two day run up lake and then spend a week or 10 days or so coming down in a leisurely canyon cruise mode. It looks good for weather there next week after a cold spell. George and Carolyn

Hi George. Love hearing about your adventures. Keep them coming, back on the Island things are showing a bit of spring as the first few buds on the trees are starting to break through. Be safe and hope to meet up one day.
Terry & Valerie

Just a quick note, we ran from lake Montezuma to Page today. Hwy 89 north of Flagstaff is closed for a while yet due to the road fracture. The alternate is fine out toward Tuba City a d then north to Cameron. Not much out there! We lunched at Cameron and ran thru some very heavy cross winds. Camp Walmart at Page tonight and rv on the lake tomorrow and launch Tuesday. Road up is rough but do able. George and Carolyn

I haven't been on Highway 89 since the road problem, but suspect it's open to Cameron, Navajo Bridge, Vermillion Cliffs, Jacob Lake, etc. The closed part would be where Hwy 89(to Page) and Hwy 89A (to Jacob lake) split.

Take Hwy89 north out of Flagstaff, to Cameron, AZ. Continue past Cameron then turn east on Hwy160 to Tuba City. Continue through Tuba City and turn north on Hwy 98 to Page.

...as George said, it's lonely country out there.

Best,
Casey&Mary
