And here's their transom bar.

We attach out "cooking table" to ours, it keeps me from falling into the transom well in my more clumsy moments, it provides a handhold when getting into the boat from the swim step (but then you have to climb over it), it serves as a barrier to things accidentally getting into the transom area, etc. I am very glad we have it.

We have had a transom bar on our boat since we bought her. I cannot think of any downside.
On the upside there is a lot. They are very strong and provide a lot of safety. Ours has three rod holders. You see two of them here:
We also use the center rod holder for supporting our grill. Here you see it in action:
There are many other things that are made to attach to a 7/8" stainless railing as well. Flag staff, antenna, lights, etc;
Wouldn't be without it.

Other modifications related to the transom bar are the cooler holder and/or shelf set into the engine well opening.
If the bar is lowered and designed for it, it can hold your cooler, getting it up off the floor and out of the way of your feet, although now it' more in the way of getting to the engines and to and from the swim step. Now the cooler helps you not fall out of the boat in your awkward moments, and you can grab another beer while you're there, too!
Turn the bar into a shelf, and now you have a bait cutting board, cocktail table, BBQ rack, cooler shelf, and a platform for firing ceremonial cannons, etc.
Make it strong enough, and you can also stand on it for viewing wildlife, doing camera work, or helping bring the dinghy aboard, etc.

We use our "bar many things. it holds the cooler up of the cockpit floor and in the splash well. I holds the rod holders that hold the flag, the BBQ, and the throwable cushion, (well not all at the same time) but as needed. It also holds a big umbrella sunshade for the cockpit.

There is also another cooler, the also hangs on the bar, forward, over the cockpit floor. Bigger, than this one, and it's big enough to put one of Starcraft Tom's fish in :wink

I must be in the minority but frequently I board from the transom when anchored near shore. This is the only down side. I don't think it would interfere with netting of fish to much.

There is another picture in my album of it down. I also plan on making a table to fit over the transom well which will attach to the "kiddie flap".
I also have an extra set of dinette clips which I will attach to the "kiddie flap" so that when it is up I can attach the dinette table.
Cheap and easy solution- I think the hardware was more expensive than the plywood
