Trailer Jack $#%!!!&

In 2012 can't we make a trailer jack than can last more than a year or two. I use my trailer about 3-4 times a year and yet jack crapped out already aflter barely 2 years. Friend has same story. Repeatedly. Would it be too much to expect a stainless tube given that these go in SALT water? They charge a ridiculous price for them as it is.

Do you guys have a secret for jack endurance?
 
OK, I'll put my cojones on the line.

The tube in SSwould be simple. Now you think about the next weak link, and then the next. How about cutting SS gears? Not $o attractive! You wouldn't want to pay the price. How long do you keep a trailer, or a boat for that matter? Think of 10 years and that's 5 jacks. Not so bad compared to SS.

Maybe flush your jack with fresh water every time and then, once dry, spray with a protectant?

OK, go ahead and give me the works......

Well, the jack on Journey On has lasted for 6 years, but then it never gets dipped into the water, salt or fresh. How far in do you back that trailer?

So, we can make a jack that lasts for more than 2 years, but now all of Fulton's jacks are made by them. Fulton told me that's better.

I am at 5 years and still going strong with my F2 by Fulton. Spendy jack certainly, but they stand behind it forever.....
 
The bushing/spacer on ours crapped out after 1 yr of ownership so I feel your pain. And you can't just buy parts; you can only purchase an entire new unit. Luckily Chuck (Bootleg Hooch) gave us one he had lying around.

I don't actually think it's a rust issue. I think the gearing mechanisms are very poorly designed/built. That seems to be the weak link.
I would gladly pay $200 for a jack if they guaranteed it for at least 5 yrs. the hassle of dealing with a busted jack sucks.

By the way it's the original trailer for this 1988 cruiser. Still runs fine and very little rust.

Sure glad these boats and trailers are not built to the standards of these jacks.
 
I went through two jacks supposedly rated for my trailer. At 700 lbs of tongue weight, it admittedly is a load. I'm happy now with my new Fulton. It's rated to lift 4000 lbs! Overkill has its advantages. :wink:

I pump mine full of grease and plug the hole in the bottom by the wheel.
No problem in 3 yrs.
I launched in Homer 3 days ago.

There is an all stainless steel jack at $300+ IIRC. Not until I got my last Fulton jack home did i notice it was made in China... No price break either, Grrr.
If I have to buy another Chinese jack it'll be from Harbor Freight for 1/3 the price of a Chinese Fulton.

If you buy it from West Marine they will take it back if it does not make you happy... I think after 5 or 6 years they might not but if it only lasts a year or two they sure would...good folks, you pay more for their stuff
but if it fails prematurely they do make it good.

I just took back a pair of bumpers that I bought years and years ago...a really long time...they would leak down...I think the valves in them wore out... they were pleased to give me a new set..
They also replaced my entire radar system after about four years...from analog to digital...it had a problem with it's GPS.. even the software.

Just remembered another thing they replaced with a smile... I had one of their jackets that after a year or two the zipper came apart...no problem..pick out another they said... got a tan one this time...great jackets especially when they are on sale (often) for $39.95

Sometimes I do grumble at their higher price, but they do have the stuff in stock and do follow thru with good service. Almost sounds like I have stock.... nope...just like their policy of fairness.

I spend a lot of money at that store and I expect service when I need it
so I think the extra is worth something.

Didn't know about the F2. That looks like the ticket. Not sold here locally. Will order as soon as my new HF jack conks out in 6 months. 😊

The more expensive jacks will hold up much better. Loom for one with a zerk at the top to be bale to grease the gears.

Or budget $35 for a new tongue jack each year.
 
Look for Dutton Lainson products . Many made in USA and good quality . Some [just a few] sourced overseas and tested to their standards . Iso 9000 company . Been around since since 1886.
3 year warranty.
At least they still try to employ Americans .They also have replacement parts for their products .

Use the jack with the plate, and adjustable leg with pins, rather than a wheel.
Much stronger and more useful. Use a trailer tolly if you want to move the trailer.....
