tow vehicles

Yep, I said something but can't hear much either. The problem was that I couldn't even hear the broadcast radio or my ham radios when going down the road. To say nothing of what my copilot was saying. But then, I get accused of not listening to her anyway....Lost my hearing shipboard with the forced draft blowers and the guns...

I love the Dodge  , missed it in my album, will try to get a shot of the whole tow rig when I hook it back up this spring!

The Hemi pulls like a semi. As of yesterday Levity's tow rig is a Dodge 2500 quad cab, 4x4, 5.7 liter, 5 speed, short bed. Rides smooth. lots of power. I'll keep you all posted as to the good and not so good of this rig as the good and not so good let themselves be known. Right now, its all good!

Dodge is starting to make some good trucks, however, the Ford F150 does a good job of towing the B~C, nice, comfy, quiet ride and fair mileage when not towing....it' fixin to do some towing here shortly....if I can get M up & going

DaveS you crafty bugger...
Just filled up after towing up to Oly, the new (2001) F150 towmobile got a shade over 12mpg with the kayaks on the roof grabbing air...didn't even know the boat was back there :) ....OK, back to my corner now, how long do I have to stay there Bill?

Toyota has a version of their Tacoma with a towing capacity of 6500 pounds which exceeds the weight of my C-Dory on the trailer full of fuel, food, and stuff for a trip. I've been looking at the Tacoma, but have some reservation just due to its smaller size.

Does anyone here have any experience towing a 22' C-Dory with a 2005 or later Tacoma?

The new Tacoma is the same basic truck as the new 4Runner, and I have a 2004 4Runner 6 cylinder. I have put maybe 5000 miles on it towing a 17' Whaler, and it tows great. My gross trailer weight is probably around 2500 pounds. The 4Runner owners manual recommends a sway control device, which I don't have but doesn't seem to be needed - boat trailer wheels being further back on the trailer than they are for utility or 'house' trailers.

You would want a V8 in the Tacoma, which I think is the engine combination that yields the higher tow rating. The Tacoma has a longer wheelbase than the 4Runner, and longer wheel bases are preferred for towing. You might need helper springs or air bags of some kind on the rear end, now that I think about it.

I use a short bed Chevrolet pick-up for my tow vehicle...and that did fine...but once I added the equalizer hitch it tows so much better.... I think that with the equalizer the size of the tow is less important as the tow and rig become more of one-piece.... It now handles so much better..

I tow my 22 ft C-Dory with a 2003 Tacoma with a V6 and it works fine. I have to shift into 3rd up huge long hills but that doesn't bother me that much.
I guarantee the newer ones with 30 more horses will pull it perfect. Plus there really cool trucks that get good gas mileage when not towing. This summer I'm going to add a nice K&N filter and an after market exhaust. We'll see if it improves the towing up hills. I do know that it will make it sound really cool. As for sway, I don't ever notice the boats back there besides the power strain up big hills.

Thanks folks. for your help. I just had to hear it from someone who's actually towed a C-Dory with a Tacoma. Sometimes the written specs don't translate well into the real world.

I am currently towing my 22 ft C-Dory with a 2005 Tacoma, 4x4, double cab, long bed. I probably have close to 2,000 towing miles on in, mostly here in Michigan. With 240 horses and close 285 foot pounds of torque it tows just fine. I run in fourth gear, 60 to 70 mph and average 12-13 mpg, admittedly on mostly flat ground. The great thing about this truck is when I am not towing the boat it averages 19 to 20 mpg. I have also have extensively towed my boat with a 2004 Ford Explorer, 4 liter V6 and a 1995 Ford F-150, 6 cylinder, pick-up and they both did ok but the Toyota is by far the better tow vehicle.

We're now towing Halcyon with a 2006 Toyota 4X4 V-8 Tundra -- great setup, and with the SnugTop on the back of the Tundra we have a home either in the boat or in the back of the truck when on the road.

Hi El & Bill,

Can you provide any other info about your Toyota V8 Tundra...how has it done up hills? How much weight do you have in the truck, towing behind you, fuel mileage, etc.

VERY CURIOUS... :smilep

Thanks,

Crazy Frazey

The Tundra pulled Halcyon up and over the Sierra on the way from So. California to Arizona without a hiccup -- no problem whatsoever. Pulling a fully loaded CD-22 on a dual-axle trailer. Got about 17 mpg on the road over the mountains. So, haven't taken a really long trip with it yet, but will be pulling from AZ to the Pacific NW in a month or so.
Check the specs on the Tundra and the frequency of repair, etc. in the consumer reports -- she comes well recommended.
