If I remember correctly, brakes and front end problems. One thing if it is an automatic have it checked out before you buy, the engine is bullet proof, no electronics just good old mechanical injector pump.
 
Mike, I did my part to balance out the trade deficit between Oregon/Washington yesterday. Drove home a new Dodge 3500 4wd, 4dr, diesel, silver with duallies. :mrgreen: Purchased in Portland.
It's to early for me to voice an opinion on the rest of the truck, but I will say this.... That Cummin's diesel has incredible torque down where it is needed. (low rpm's) :thup

Well, he didn't write it, because dad don't write much, but that's what he said! He said some other stuff, too. I wanted the duals, based on what you and Fred said, but, well, I've always been an obedient child. As it turns out, the single rears was the better choice for me, and using the towing ability of the Jeep to compare the two rigs, that's all I need. Just don't ever let me drive yours, or I might not be so happy with the choice!

And, hey, congratulations! I didn't figure it would take you long to get back to a farm truck. The first time you get the boat trailer hooked up to the Dodge, dig out your wide-angle lens and get a picture of it for us.

Your opinion of the rest of the truck will only be good. It is tight, quiet, as smooth as a 1-ton can be, and fun to drive. I have close to 3000 miles on mine, and have no regrets.

You think we should start a new web group for Dodge onwers? We could call it CBCDDTR.
 
Congrats! Larry S. Next thing you know Les is going to have to open a Dodge Dealership too and then he can put together package deals of Dodge Diesels and C-Dorys!

Be thankful that you are licensing that new truck in WA instead of OR. It cost Kay $90 for the title and registration for the new truck. That's ninety bucks! And it's only good until 2007!

Hey - what happened to that proposition I-695 from a few years back? I thought you guys were the same as OR for icense fees now. But, ain't it something that I bought in WA where there is a sales tax and did not pay it, yet you bought in OR where there is no sales tax, and did pay it? That ain't right.

I suppose I shouldn't complain about the taxes here in Washington. Ya know that box on your paycheck that says "$Paid to the Oregon Dept. of Revenue".... they don't have that up here. :mrgreen:

How you likin' that Dodge by now? Fuel mileage? Mine is getting right at 19, up from 18. Might hit 20 by the time it's loosened up. I sure like having it to drive on the ice and snow. I think being so heavy helps a bunch. I haven't slipped nor slid once, and there have been many opportunities.
 
I luv my new Dodge! It really is fun to drive. When I get behind the wheel and start driving, I get the feeling that towing my boat across country would be piece of cake. (today's Lake Powell thread really got me thinking... to bad it's right in the middle of springer season)
Anyhow, my first impressions on the 3500. That diesel engine is incredible! It almost idles over hills at 1500 rpm's. 555 lbs of torque at 1400 rpm's is something I'd never experienced before... verrry nice!
It's much easier to drive downtown than my 4dr F-350 Ford was, it's turning radius is much shorter.
I didn't realize that it was so heavy until I went to register it at the County. Shipping weight was 7460 lbs..... and I'm getting about 18 mpg. That's much better than the 12 mpg that I was getting with the V-10 Ford. I'm a happy camper. :mrgreen:
 
All the Ford/Dodge bashing aside, the decision is more complicated for us CA guys - due to our extra-special state emissions laws, we can't get an HO Cummins - only the standard output.

Which made my decision a heck of a lot easier...the mods I've been adding to my 97 PowerStroke have turned out quite nice. Looking forward to comparing/contrasting with some of you HO Cummins guys at a future gathering.

Since my warranty was up a couple years ago, I've gone ahead with some pretty cool engine mods, with a few more planned. Added a free flowing intake and 4" exhaust, chipped the PCM for better power and shifting patterns, and did some minor tranny mods. Haven't had it on a dyno yet, but based on feedback from other PowerStroke guys who have done similar mods, it's probably somewhere around 290HP/580 torque. Stock for my year engine is about 200/465.

Next on the agenda are bigger injectors - should take it to about 355HP/680 torque. Which will probably be followed by a new bullet-proof tranny to handle the extra oomph.

Biggest trade-off - the ride. I've done a few things to soften it up, but the new trucks are sooooo much smoother.

Larry - Now then, what final drive ratio did you get? I'm thinking you must have the 3.73, because mine is 4.10 and at 55 mph it turns about 1700 rpm. Unless you're driving like an old feller and idling over the hills at 47 mph/1500 rpm! Just curious. I really don't think a guy would be able to feel the difference on the highway or at the fuel pump.
 
Mike, the truth is I don't know what ratio rear end my Dodge has. I think it's the 3.73 but wouldn't swear to it. I have the window sticker right in front of me and it doesn't list anything about the rear end. I read on the Dodge website that the standard rear end is 3.73 with an optional 4.10.
I do drive like an old feller though... and justly so. :mrgreen:

The ratio is listed on my sticker near the end of the Optional Equipment list. If yours is not listed, then you're probably right on about the 4.10 being optional and the 3.73 standard. Oh crap - you can go faster than me! I wasn't going to tell anyone about the ratio, because Fred said to get the taller gears. But both the 1-tons on the lot had the low ones, and I convinced myself it was better for towing. Fred will forgive me, I'm sure. Just like you got over my not getting the duals.
