Tow vehicle engine choice

Sadly all the diesels seem to require a $40K+ outlay to buy new. I've read that Ford has F-150 models pushing 100K and they sell everything they can build. Not sure I'll ever own one since I don't trailer all the time and thusly don't want to park that much cash in a tow vehicle. I think if I did tow frequently I'd get a used 3/4 ton with a gas V-8. Those things seem to run forever.

Lots of articles will say lots of things. I have an ecodiesel. I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee which could tow the 23 venture but the bumps around Seattle with the load leveling suspension were annoying. So far so good. I average 22mpg driving two hours from Portland’s east side through the city to Hillsboro. Towing the boat at 70-75 from anacortes to Portland I get about 14.5 mph average. I have no complaints. A friend of mine who is a service manager at a Chrysler shop said the first year was horrible as in complete engine melt down but since then they rarely see ecodiesels in the shop. I have a 2017 after they got recertification from the EPA. 4800 miles so far and no issues. I got my two tone Laramie edition for 44k (original sound sticker for the truck was close to 60).

In 2015 I bought a Chevy 1500 5.3L and it broke down dumping fuel out of the engine on a hot day. The fuel hose apparently had an issue. I ditched the truck and can say the RAM drives better and I love the gas mileage. The Chevy had IMO horrible throttle lag at times. Anyways I am brand agnostic seems like all new cars will have some issue, that’s why you have a warranty.

Also the truck doesn’t sound like a diesel inside, outside it’s 70% quieter than the Cummins. It will tow 9000 (short bed crew) lbs just watch the payload as it is not huge and current standards include 300lbs in people. IE my boat has a 500lb tounge weight add 4 people at an average of 180 subtract 300 that is 420lbs so 920 lbs leaving 300 lbs for additional gear on the truck. Long beds get better capacity. But I live in the city. You always have to keep in mind max towing is calculated with 2wd and a long bed. Mine is 4x4. It suits my needs but if I needed more towing or payload I would look at the Ford but they ask a lot more money for them and sorry ford fans I don’t like the look.
