Great opening weekend for the Toronto boat show - 54deg. here today.

No C Dory's but 3 beautiful Ranger Tugs. A 21,29 and 31.

Those 21's are real cute - red hull - $70, as optioned. I asked what its range might be. Salesman told me the 30hp Yanmar would idle for 3 days on its 18gal. tank!

We also took a tour of the 29 - $285, as optioned. Beautiful boat and many ingenious uses of space. My wife didn't like the only head being in the main cabin. What if you have guests and they need to use it in the night? Darn, and I had my check book out to buy it! :lol:

The 31 had a looong line up to view it so we left, but it was a great looking boat as well - with many ingenious and practical design features. Like the flying bridge that folds down for trailering or low bridges. Seats that fold out over the gunwhales. Table and seats on the foredeck, etc.

Ranger Tugs even sent a factory rep to the show to answer any questions that the dealers salesmen couldn't .

I love that r21. i really gave it a long hard look before I finally bought the 16. It really is a neat little boat with a lot of options I just couldn't get past the price. Didn't you think it was a lot of money for a 21 foot boat???

Maybe one day in a few years I'll look for a good used one...they're pretty cool.
 
Lots of used R21ECs in the low $40K price range here in the US.

We have looked seriously at them for our Delaware beach place but I have concern about the boat's ability to handle the speed of the tide race at the Indian River Inlet. My ever sensible wife just says stay in the Bay! My wife is also in love with the fringed "African Queen" top and cockpit seating for sundowners. Definitley high class for flounder fishing!

Brian, sometimes the smallest boat in the line is the cutest - like your 16, the R21 or the 19Yellow Tail from Defiance.

Yes 70k is expensive but in addition to being cute they are well made, excellent fit and finish, quality components, and top notch factory support. The Yanmar diesel is the same motor I have on my generator, they are bulletproof.

They are a bit on the slow side, and being a displacement hull adding hp will not raise their speed above the designed hull speed. On the plus side you can load them up and they still go the same speed(or close to it).

With their narrow beam they are considerably smaller than the average 21' boat but for singlehanding or a couple they would make an excellent cruiser. The one I saw at the show had a full swim platform. You could carry extra fuel on it and have a great range.

There is a used red hull 21 for sale on Tugnuts. The blue hull is my pick on the larger tugs but on the 21 the red looked sweet.

It would be a great boat for canals like our Trent. A lot of areas are speed restricted, where a disp. or semi disp. hull would be right at home. A few times I found myself in a long speed restricted area with a trawler behind me. The planing hull of my Stingray is not happy doing 7mph. :(

Bottom line I guess is the "fun factor" - I would sure love to take one for a cruise. :D :D

Joe, if you like electric boats check out the Bruce 22 Gentlemans Launch. Modern 1930's style capable of over 30mph. You can water ski behind it. At 20mph it has a range of over 50km. They were designed and are built in Montreal Canada by Montreal Boatworks. A lot are used on "no motorboat" lakes.

Brian, I'm sure you'll be happy with your new 16CD, but if you ever want to check for a R21 - Bridge Yachts in Port Dover occationally have one. Two years ago they had one at the Port Credit boat show. Talking about shows - looking forward to the London boat show in February. Do you ever go to that one? Don't think I'll make it to the Hamilton show this year.

Thanks for the idea!

Hard to believe they can have that much energy stored in batteries.

Hope it doesn't use the same lithium ion battery/ies as the Chevy Volt and the Boeing 887 Dreamliner (!)
