Looking thru ads for C-Dory's I have noticed folks with Late 90's boats refer to them as "toland Era Boats" . They say and/or insinuate they are betterr built than the newer C-Dory's.

Any truth to this or just legend. "Evverything was better in the ole days"

Thanks

When someone says to me, "things were better in the good old days". I reply, "you mean like Diptheria, Adolf Hitler, Polio, etc ?

It can matter, but I don't think a poor job was done by any builder of these boats.

It's common for a boat design/type to be built by different manufacturers. There are differences when different manufacturers build the same boat design. Further, these boats are largely hand made in thet the glass work is laid by hand. This is different from a mass-produced product like a Bayliner. If Bayliner was sold, and their production facilities were conveyed, it's likely the new owner would make largely the same boat. In I believe all cases, production was moved to a different place each time the CDory line was sold. So there will be differences. They may be small, but there.

There are some specific differences in models of any given year, in terms of their setup that may be preferable to you. Up to you in that regard.

There is a current thread: "Does model year matter" that may get at some of your questions.

When the Tolands sold C-Dory the building crew moved to the new owner and continued to build the boats. After a time, the new owners wanted to go to mass production and required their dealers to buy and stock the boats like cars.

Some smaller dealers could not or would not do that and dropped C-Dory boats (EQ Marine was one). Some of the experienced workers refused to work 6 days per week and refused to do poor work to speed up the line. These skilled, experienced workers were replaced by lower paid unskilled labor. My opinion is that the product suffered.

That factory went out of business and sold to another builder, who also went out of business. The building rights were then picked up by the current factory.

This is all documented on this site, if you want to search old posts.

This is not to say that any particular boat built in any particular year is better of worse. C-Dory boats were built by hand and each particular boat should be inspected and surveyed prior to purchase, like any boat.

The above is my opinion, and the details are subject to verification.

It depends on the boat and how it was cared for more than when it was built. I have owned boats years from 1993, 2003, 2006 and 2006. Am looking at a 1995 boat currently with my son. I had no hesitation buying the 2006 C Dory 22, which is my current primary boat. No problems with it. I like it better than the 1993, because of some features, but the hulls are basically built just as well.

I have heard that the curren t boats being made are of better quality than they were back in the 90's and 2000's.

My 2005 is pretty good but I find "warts" on it ocassionally.
