Tohatsu OB's

@ C

New member
Anyone have one? Looking for a replacement for the old Merc on @C..
I know they are 2/s but are supposed to be as efficient as 4/s and less expensive.
Input?
Thanks, Bill

I put a new Tohatsu 50EFI on my new ,07 16 Angler.

It is a fine match, really more power than I need. Starts right away an
is outstanding for little fuel use and slow running.

Not as quiet as a Yamaha.

I have to say it's a great choice for the boat.

Enjoy!

Hey Mal:
Thanks for the reply. May I ask how much it cost vs. a four stroke?
Also, how do you like the back to back seating?
Have not seen that before.
Thanks,
Bill

Mal,

Is that engine a 4-stroke (EFI) or an injected 2-stroke (TLDI)? I wasn't aware that Tohatsu makes a line of injected 2-strokes until I read Bill's post. And, you betcha, they do.

Boris

Looks like the largest four stroke they make - according to their website -is 30hp.
The tldi motors run from 40 to 115 hp.
I'm just curious about this line of motors because I have a couple friends with older 2 strokes - not tldi - and they are very happy with them.

Tohatsu's are, in fact, re-badged Nissan outboards. Only difference is the decal. Great outboards, great value.

Don

Close Don, but no :cigar . Actually, the Nissan is a rebadged Tohatsu, according to Marc at Wefings quoted from here
http://www.c-brats.com/viewtopic.php?t= ... tsu+nissan

"I have sold them for over 15 years . Best kept secret in the boating industry . First outboard builder in Japan .Found on commercial boats worldwide. TLDI is low pressure injection [same Aussie technology as Merc Opti] but you don't have to pay for the marketing . The big decision is 2 stroke DI or 4 Stroke . The 4th year of the warranty is on the [Orbital brand ] Fuel Injection system only. They are 5 Lbs lighter than E Tec ,run very similarly, ,come with the control box and tach and alum. prop, substantially less dollars and well proven for over 5 years . A Nissan is really a Tohatsu , the Nissan name is licensed for brand recognition purposes . Tohatsu is the builder . Nissans cost more due to the name . Tohatsu builds many other companies small portable motors. I believe they are partially owned by Brunswick but not certain ."
FYI.

Thanks for digging that up.
What I'm interested in is what the Tohatsu costs vs. the popular four strokes.
I have a 4 year old Suzuki 140 (4 stroke) on my Trophy and can not say enough good things about it. Fine motor.
Just looking to save some bucks on a good motor. And some weight.
Thanks,
Bill

Thanks Marty. I knew they were identical, just assumed the Tohatsu was the "Camry" and Nissan was the "Avalon." OBTW, I don't do cigars. That's a Presidential perk.

Not the first term, Marty. Yer not that old.... "I like Ike" bumper stickers were "da bomb" back then.

BTW they cant sell TLDI 40 H.P. and up over the internet . They have to be installed are pre delivery inspected by an authorized dealer in order for the warranty to be good .
As a matter of fact ,if you take one of those "screaming internet deals" to you local dealer for service , they might have a "waiting list" . Something to think about .........

You're way off, Don. Nissan is Datsun. Camry and Avalon are both Toyotas. The only way to be sure in the Japanese market is to stick with Honda.

I have a two stroke 9.8, long shaft, electric start 2002 Nissan on my 22 classic and it has many hundred trolling hours and is still on the same spark plug. It has underwater exhaust, is quiet, does not load up, no oil sheen and starts instantly. (no smoke).

Will troll at 2mph for eight hours on three qts. of gas. Run it dry in the fall and it starts right up in the spring after sitting for six months. It weighs 65 lbs.. I would buy another one in a heart beat, but I don't think their make it anymore. Got it from Cabelas frieght paid and no sales tax $1600 bucks. One of my better buy's. C-Otter

Marty:
I did the same thing today. Great minds think alike.
AND in DE there is no sales tax.

Hey Sneaks, I don't think you will see too many 'I Like Ike" bumper stickers around these days, especially in the Gulf! Poor folks.

Well, you're right (so to speak). I was a junior in high school, in Miss Harden's class called "Problems in American Democracy", 1952, I think. Will that ruin my membership in "Youth for Obama"?

My good friend bought a new Tohatsu about four years ago. It was a 5 hp outboard to act as a kicker on his ski boat and main motor on his 12 ft. aluminum skiff. I think it is a 2 stroke, but am not certain. He's had nothing but trouble from it and has spent quite a bit of money on repairs that still doesn't seem to help. It never would idle down and make his ski boat troll very slow for very long, and starting was a problem. C.W.
