Tiller Extension?

C-Gypsy

New member
I have a Honda 90 & a Honda 9.9 on C-Gypsy.

Using the tiller on the 9.9 has always been difficult. I have a bracket in place that sets the 9.9 aft several inches to clears the trim tab.

Problem is I can hardly reach the tiller & it is very uncomfortable to use for more than 5 minutes.

Seems like I spent a lot of money on a motor I never use. Any suggestions folks?

Thanks!

Al

There are clamp on tiller extensions, which have a detent system to keep the handle at what length you choose. I slips over the handle, and then tightens down. I got mine at West Marine. Google outboard tiller extension.

For smaller engines, I just use the correct size of PVC pipe, which slips over the handle. as I recollect 1 1/4" works well on the Merc 3.5 hp dinghy motor (conduit is heavier and works better).

Al, I have a 5 HP motor what I did was but a bar from my 90 over to the 5HP to steer it, then I Installed a Electric Control at the Captans Seat to throlle the little motor. Jim

Why not connet your kicker to the main motor with a steering rod and steer from the helm? You can also install a device to control the throttle from the helm also. Pretty common setup up here in the Northwest.

EDIT: Oh, I just realized that Jim already pointed that out, above. :)

I would like to be able to control the 9.9 from the cockpit. Seems like it might make things easier when docking and come in handy while fishing.

I do like the idea of a bar and an electric control at the helm though.

If Pandy Girl is going to be at the NC gathering perhaps I can get a look at your setup Jim. (?)

I have decided to go with the Helmsmate tiller extension.

I do not want the extendable version and am undecided whether to go with the 18" fixed size or the 30" fixed size.

Any thoughts gentlemen?

Thanks!

Al

30" seems a little unwieldly, but I would probably choose that one anyway. It would enable you to have a little more moving around distance, and it would swing up to not be in the way all the time. 18" seems like would restrict you to one area in the cockpit.

I agree that the 30" model might be a tad unwieldy. The length of the cockpit is only 52", so a 30" tiller will take up a lot of room.

On the other hand my little Honda sits so far aft that part of the 30" will be aft of the transom.

I also agree that the 30" model will afford me more mobility. I installed tiller extensions on two of my sailboats back in the day... Sort of spoils a person, being able to move around!

By fall I hope to install the same setup Jim & Rick mentioned. I hope I can simply swing the extension up when using that configuration (don't see why not, but I overlook a lot of things!).
