Damn I hate thieves!!!
Got up this morning walked out the front door and looked at the boat in the dirveway and the kicker was gone. The bastarts cut the lock, wiring, fuel line and hydraulic hoses to the brand new TR1 Gold, and walked off with the 9.9 Yamaha. If anyone see's a too good to be true deal on a Yamaha T9.9EXH with the serial number 1002291 or hears of someone looking for parts for a TR1 gold, please let me know. The motor can be identified by a small amount of white gel coat over spray that got on the cover and control panel during a bit of hull repair.

Ron;
Sorry to hear about your loss, I'll keep my ears and eyes open for you. Roughly what part of the lower mainland are you in?

Ron-

Sorry to hear about the motor/loss. We'll keep an ear tuned and eye open for it.

Wonder if it is the same type or organized group that steals them and ships them overseas en mass?

We had this same type of missing motor incident earlier with Fred (Anita Marie).

Then starcraftom, as I remember, had a double header, first the C-80, and then the radar dome.

Guess it's a fact of life, today. Makes insurance coverage for theft a real necessity.

All of us should be sure we're not only covered, but have as many receipts and photos of equipment (+ serial numbers) as possible to allow for replacement.

Hope things work out for you.

Joe.

That's one of my fears is that I'll go to the boat and the kicker and radar will be gone. I did add some bolts that go through the motor mount and bracket but where there is a will there's a way. Scumbags. I'll keep my eye out.

On the TR-1 I take it they only got the hydraulic cylinder/bracket right? I hope so as this is probably the cheapest component.

Geez, Ron - really sorry to hear about this. We had our Mercury RU-240 stolen right off the roof of the boat in our driveway at Birch Bay right after returning from Desolation Sound. Makes you just want to punch something! Insurance? Our dinghy was covered, surprisingly, for replacement value...

Thanks for the commiserating folks. It is such a shitty feeling seeing something you've worked hard for stolen and far too many of us have had that experience. I sure wish there was some way we could collectively change society so that theft isn't tolerated, but I sure don't know how. Any way in order to get something positive out of this I'm going to start another thread on "how to secure a kicker"
Ron

I shed and share a tear or two for you, Ron!

My "hate-a-thief" focus started many years ago - they (he?) tried to steal the main motor from my 17' Whaler, and because I had welded the retaining nuts on the o/b they took motor and transom. Kill mode indeed!! The frosting on that cake, the insurance company (now an ex) fought my claim because my boat wasn't stored in a "secure" area. :cry

Stealing is not something new, but the drugies sure refine the art. My little 410 halibut Snake Charmer wouldn't hurt much, but might be an attention getter. :smile

Ron, et all:

Sorry to hear about the theft. When you replace your kicker, look at the Mercury locks. There is no way for the low lifes to get a bolt cutter on the lock, and it seems to be about as secure as anything I have seen.

Which means, that I will probably find that someone has taken a sawzall to my transom.

Those scumbags are even out in the country. The other night several of us guys in the neighborhood were discussing a recent rash of burgleries that have been going on in our area.

Then tonight on my way home towing the boat, my wife was following me in the car. When I got to beginning of our private dead end road (which is clearly marked as private, with the usual garble about guests only and we are going eliminate your first born if you trespass etc. etc. etc.), I motioned my wife to pass by me. After she drove past me, I continued down our road.....suddenly I became aware of a car traveling close up behind the boat trailer with no headlights on. So I stopped in the middle of the road, jumped out of the truck with my mag light in hand shone it on him and surprised the crap out of the guy....he shoved his car in reverse and sped backwards down the road, still with lights out. I'm really surprised he managed to keep his rig on the road. I suspect the scumbag was following me to see where I went with those two Johnsons hanging off the transom. I have no idea where that car came from. Carol didn't notice it behind her, before I had her pass me.

I'm glad that I'm able to keep the boat stored completely inside the shop, but even that isn't always enough security. So, now the bedroom window is open with a clear view of all the doors on the shop, and weapons are sited in. (There are no windows on the ground floor of the shop, for this reason!)

Last week there was an article in the Everett Herald about a fellow that had his truck parked at the boat launch in Lake Stevens. He returned to his truck, started it and it sounded like a freight train. He looked underneath his rig to find that someone had taken a saw and cut his catalytic converter out. The article went on to say that the tweakers are stealing catalytic converters and selling them to recyclers for $50 to $200. Apparently there are 3 precious metals used in their manufacture. I don't recall the metals, but one is worth about $4,000. and ounce.

Hi Folks,

I have been following this thread.

I think it all started a few years ago when that farmer set up the shotgun to shoot who ever was breaking in to his farm. It worked. Shot the legs of the crooks. They went to court, and the court gave them the farm to the crooks.

The whole problem is the attitude of the Judges. On the Island I live, driving under the influence charges are a joke. One guy got convicted by a jury for DUI, and the judge threw it out.

In any community, the Court Judge sets the tone. If you have a "hanging" Judge, crime goes down.

Don't shoot anybody. You will just loose your farm.

Hi Flapbreaker,

The Mercury lock is literally made by Mercury. Stop by one of their dealerships to check it out. I paid about $40 US for mine, but have seen them as high as $70. I have one on Constant Craving's kicker (plus a bolt), and one on my Honda 15 on my high lakes boat.

Steve

Great idea -- I'd sure like to get the transom back from my 17' Whaler :disgust

A judge would put me away. I always have the large flare gun and a can of pepper spray aboard (it's a no-no)... took the course from the local police.

I put some pictures in my album showing the locks I've added to Meander! There is three of them locking the kicker only! :amgry At least the damn theives will get some exercise if they manage to get it this time. I hope the noise will wake me this time.

Lock It Up!

They will have their work cut out for them this time. Too bad you guys up there are not allowed to have arms. That could put a dent to some of the thievery going on.

Ron, that's a great solution idea....can you give us the specs (manufacturer, source) for the chain/lock setup? We need to do something on ours, since the dealer put the kicker on a bracket when they redid the new boat, the Honda-made cylinder lock that fit before doesn't work any more. We rigged something up, but worry about the lock getting rusted, as it has to sit with the key entry up, allowing moisture to gather in the "guts".

Thanks,
Caty

Caty,
The thumbscrew lock is a Yamaha product. I think it would work on any kicker that has the screw on mounts though. You could get it through most Yamaha dealers. The chain and padlocks could be purchased from most locksmiths I would think. I don't know the chain manufacturer but it is a heavy flat link chain. The locks are high end master locks. Another though I had was to use a piece of flat bar, maybe 3/8 x 4 inch by about 5 ft. It would slide between the two motors pivot shafts and with a heavy lock on each end it would work like the chain but probably be easier to put on. The chain flops around a fair bit and because the hasps of the locks are very tight when locked you have to get the chain in the right position before the lock will close. Its no problem with a bit of practice but it was kind of finicky the first few times.

Dave,
I hear you. Sometimes I wish..... but then I slept through the ba..ards taking the kicker and the boat is only 40ft from my bedroom window. I was probably mad enough to shoot the neighbour though. His bedroom is only 10ft from the boat.
