The Humpback Whales are back in the Santa Barbara Channel. I was able to get out on the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary research vessel Shearwater last week and between Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands we were treated to an amazing array of pairs. One pair approached the boat and circled us with great curiosity and playfulness for about 40 minutes.

What amazing creatures! A couple years ago, Joan and I went out on a sailboat with an old guy on Maui. He said, "You wanna photograph some whales, huh?" The way he shuffled in his walk, I was concerned he might not survive the trip. When we got out in the channel between Maui and Lanai, we dropped the sails, and he went below. We saw a few whales in the distance, but nothing close enough for a good shot. When the old guy came up, he had an old wooden box. I watched as he took a microphone out of the box... "Oh, great, karaoke?" I thought. He hooked a couple wires to the microphone, clipped them to what looked like an old mini-Heathkit contraption, and tossed the microphone overboard. Now what? A few seconds later, we were listening to whales singing. OK, that's cool. He listened a bit, then said, "One's gonna come up over there."

"Right," I didn't say it out loud.

About 20 seconds later, up popped a whale right where he said. "OK, old dude, you've got my attention!"

I'll be darned if he didn't listen and say, "This time it'll be over there." This time, I had my camera ready. Got some great shots!

The size! The power! And you can look in their eyes and see that they're looking back at you. We've heard them singing when diving and snorkeling... no question about the intelligence and emotion they possess.

Love the photos you posted - thanks! :thup :D

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Very cool!

Once back in the mid 80's, when I frequently scuba dove, we encountered a mother and her pup outside Hawaii Kai. We stopped the boat and they swam right up/near the boat. I donned my mask, snorkel and fins as did others on the boat. We all jumped in and swam with them. I don't think that it was legal back then and know it's not now. But...mom was very adamant that she stay between us and her offspring. This lasted for a very short time frame and when they decided they had enough they began to swim off. I stupidly gave it everything I had, but there's no way I could match their speed, even though it appeared they were just leisurely swimming away. Mom was very graceful in the water for such a large animal and I felt richer for the encounter.

The grays are up here now and a few have been seen near Whidbey Island. It'd be great to see them but I don't know how long they'll be here.

Kinda like the carp rolling on Lake Livingston - only better !
