PETA peeved over Pike Place fish-throwing demo

Seattle’s Pike Place Market

SEATTLE – PETA says it is urging a veterinary group to cancel plans for a Pike Place Fish Market fish-throwing demonstration at an upcoming convention.

In a letter to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), which plans a Seattle convention, PETA says fish are intelligent, sensitive animals. PETA writes “You should know that people who care about animals are appalled that a veterinary organization, whose purpose is to represent the interests of those whose jobs involve protecting the well-being of animals, would promote an event in which animals are treated so disrespectfully and are handled as if they were toys.”

PETA says that according to studies, fish not only feel pain, but they learn tasks, have long-term memories and show affection.

A spokesperson for the Pike Place Fish Market told KING 5: “We’re not doing a fish-throwing presentation. We’re doing a presentation, and there might be fish thrown.”

“We love fish. We respect fish,” assistant manager Justin Hall said. “Fish is what makes our business thrive and what drives customers to us. There’s nothing we would ever do to disrespect seafood.”

PETA is asking the AVMA, which is the nation’s largest organization of veterinarians, to use a rubber fish in place of a real fish during the demo.

“It’s cruel enough to eat fish, but it literally adds insult to injury to use them as toys for silly stunts,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman, in a statement released to the press.

I followed a link to this site link

After watching the video of the seal harvest I clicked on the link to email the olympic committee thru the peta web site. Only I changed the words a little.

I was delighted to learn that the Canadian government will allow 338,200 seals to be processed in this year’s annual harvest on seals, all for a product that everyone needs. These annoying animals are shot or have their skulls smashed in. Then they are skinned for their fur – often while they are still conscious. ( more fun)

All eyes are on Canada as it prepares to host the 2010 Winter Olympics. Please help extend the seal slaughter immediately so that the reputation of the Vancouver Olympic Games will be of a group that told the crazies at peta to jump off a cliff.

Please go back and log on and use peta to let the world know that not everyone is as stupid as them

Tom,

While we may not agree on seal harvests we do agree that C-Dories are cool little boats that if enjoyed across the globe would surely end war, global warming, and flu pandemics. That said, let's keep C-Brats about boats and not about politics.

Cheers,

Matt

I'm just glad that I bought a 22' Cruiser, instead of the 22' Angler which could be used to harm fish feelings.

I don’t see PETAS stand on fishing as politics but as comedy. And me using their own web site to email how absurd they are is hilarious, Nothing to do with politics at all. I fully support Canada’s right to regular the harvest of a renewable, plentiful resource. I would never hit a seal or wear a fur coat, but that’s just me.

AS far as c-dory related (just my opinion) boats are for fishing and if peta had its way none of us would be allowed to fish or have a boat. My 2 cents and I will let it go at that. I was not trying to start anything.

Bashing principles or ideas is one thing. Bashing the people who hold them is quite another. There are plenty of hate-centered group sites on which to do that.
