The Cruising Adventures of Wild Blue and crew...

I was happy to see the topic of your blog post today, as I have been considering buying an iPad for navigation. If I were only planning to use it for that, I think I'd go for the full-sized one. But this'd be my first iPad, and I can potentially see myself using it for other things (such as carrying it along with me, or reading in bed) where my laptop is a bit large and the "big" iPad felt a bit heavy when I hefted it in the store.

Of course I still can't decide, but it was nice to see the Mini in action on the boat :thup

Jim, for the ipad garmin blue chart app, did you get the US coastal or the whole North America maps? I was wondering if the finger lakes were covered on the US coastal for $29.99?

Hi Mark,

I bought the US coastal. Looking at the sections, I think the Finger Lakes are in there. The only areas I have opened are the Texas Gulf Coast and Puget Sound/San Juan Islands.

For the Texas portion, there is a blank section along the Brownsville Ship Channel (very close to the Mexico border, and not neatly aligned in the rectangles for Garmin's selection area).

Charting in the Finger Lakes and along the Erie was spotty on the Navionics Platinum Charts when we cruised there in 2009. The charting is only as comprehensive as the surveying.

Sunbeam - If I were only going to have one iPad, it would be the regular size. Our original iPad is getting a little long in the tooth as far as computerish whizbangs (technical term), but is still very functional. We added the Mini for just what you were saying: reading in bed, and use on the go. From my perspective, web surfing is easier on the original size iPad, but most other stuff is pretty similar. Joan got me a stylus to use with the Mini - it makes typing on it much easier.

Two things I didn't care for with the iPad: ease of printing and the ability to use layers and other Photoshop functions... both solved now with an Epson app and an inexpensive printer and the new Adobe Photoshop app.

The iPad was a game-changer when we first got it. We both still feel that way; they have become even more functional over time.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Merry Christmas and Congrats on the Christmas Eve accommodations. Fun to have the family together. Nice reason to get to sleep on the boat too. (No real excuse needed though, huh?)

A little late to this conversation about the iPads, iPhones and Garmin's app. I was disappointed to learn that I had to "upgrade" my iOS to run it (have iOS 5, requires 6). Some say not really an upgrade, but I guess I will be assimilated...I do want to give it a look, can somebody explain why it is better than Navionics though?

Garmin app uses same vector maps as its chart plotter and the user can transfer routes, waypoints, etc between devices if supported. Garmin and Active Captain collaborated on the app and check the later web site for additional details and sign up for their newsletter which includes Defender.com deals.

I wish the newsletter were longer as I enjoy their writing style and story telling in the same vein as the C Brats community

Hi Pat,

The integration with Active Captain is pretty much what the Garmin app has over the Navionics app. Realistically, either will do you fine. I don't know what generation iPad you have, but it is my understanding that the Garmin app will not run on the 1st generation iPad, due to RAM-type memory differences, not just the iOS upgrade.

Hope that helps.

Best wishes,
Jim

Almost but not exactly. The 1st gen iPads can't be upgraded to the newer iOS due to ram limitations. The Garmin app won't run under the older iOS.

And a Happy New Year to all my C-Brat friends. Hope to see many of you this next year.

I may not make it until midnight for the fireworks across the bay, but I am sure there will be plenty of anticipation fireworks around our town.

Best Wishes from Walldog, Willie and Jake.

Hi Jim and Joan and Izzy,

Happy New 2013. Just caught up on the Wild Blue Blog. Could sure use some of that 70ish up here today. We will probably make 40 though, so we are in the liquid side of the thermometer anyway. Have hummingbirds in the back yard and green grass ---> and no I am not going to mow it. (It would scare the birds away.)

Congrats on "Miss December" Looks like you probably took that at Jones Island last 4th of July or something   Nice. and cool.

Watched the New Years at the Needle last night, with some root beer and eggnog (VERY good), and then took a sleep in day this morning. Off work today so going to go spend some time on the boat.

Congrats on the new (updated) ticket.

Thanks, Harvey; it's the same ol' ticket, just another 5 years. More paperwork, but they do keep you better informed during the process.

Happy New Year! Looks like we have a few days of "winter" blowing in... highs in the 50s the next 3 days... brrrrrrrr! Perspective, huh?

Best wishes,
Jim

We made it past 12 this morning... Watched the Maple Leaf Drop from the highest building in Eastport Maine on CNN. That happened at 11PM which, of course is the time midnight comes in Canada just across the river( Atlantic Std Time). Then at midnight, they had a Sardine Drop. The highest building in Eastport is three stories tall, a real skyscraper!!

Sally and I will be up there next year for Christmas and New Year's!
