The Cruising Adventures of Wild Blue and crew...

Just a small technical point, I am pretty sure the correct spelling is "Dumbassistan" not "Dumbassastan" (i.e., with an "i" not an "a" before the "stan" part).

I had two "wild and crazy guys" (think back to the old Saturday Night Live routine) on the boat today...

Don't make me say it...

Sorry we missed Bob and Betsy and Casey and Jim (Mary?). But it looked like we might have trouble getting dock space on Saturday night, so we anchored out at Montague and ate all our prohibited food items. Good smooth trip today into Anacortes.

Best.

Ah, yes, Herb - we always eat well the night before we come back from Canada. :D Beautiful water today - I had two interesting charters today.

And, a visit this evening from our C-Brat friends Patrick and Kim (Kim Christine); they were very gracious, inviting us to join them and friends... alas, the long day today (we both went in early) left us a bit tuckered.

Best wishes,
Jim

Jim & Joan...we'll be up there on Friday w/ Meredith's parents. I'll stop by to say "Aloha!".

Aloha, ka hoa. I have an early whale watch trip, followed by a lengthy water taxi trip on Friday... taking a bunch of people to another island, then have to wait while they have some function, then bring 'em back. I'm guessing I won't be back before 7:00 pm. Are you all coming in your boat or by ferry? If Izzy is the only one home, you'll know I'm still working. We'll look forward to seeing you if the timing works.

Best wishes,
Jim

A day off for us today. We got a call from Barry and Patti (C-Cakes); they are spending the night at Friday Harbor. The four of us had supper out, plenty of lively conversation.

Earlier, Joan and I had gone to Roche for our favorite prime rib sandwich (yes, it's worth the drive). Two meals out today - we are livin' large.

About 2 1/2 weeks to go with our contract here, then we'll be back to no schedule, no destination, and cruising at an easy pace.

Jim, Sounds like you had a pretty great day, and finished with a pretty neat sunset, (Was it #1, #2 or #3 :?: ) The south sides of the straits were pretty much not like that. We had fog and pretty much could not even tell where the light was coming from most of the day. Thistle class sailboat races cancelled for lack of participation by Mother Nature. Would have been a nice day for water skiing if the forecast had been closer to the predicted 90. As it was, I got a real nice nap, some good reading done, some studying, and a nice restful, relaxing day on the boat. Battery recharged again.

A nap? Ahhhhh... I remember naps. Sounds like a laid-back, relaxing kinda day, Harvey.

Just when I think we're beyond the crush here, someone else gets a week off (speaking of relaxing). We both had some overtime again this week.

Relaxing is a couple weeks away... well, once we make the change from liveaboards to cruisers again.

Best wishes,
Jim

Jim,

Nice moon shot :!:

Have a really nice Holiday (Labor) Day weekend. By the way, it's hot air balloon weekend in Sequim. Just in case you see any of them wandering your way looking for a place to land.

IZZY's probably looking for some cruise time soon.

Take Care Short Timer.

And for the trivia folks...

What is a Blue Moon?

There are in fact two definitions for a blue moon. According to the more recent definition, a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. For a blue moon to occur, the first of the full moons must appear at or near the beginning of the month so that the second will fall within the same month (the average span between two moons is 29.5 days). The full Moon on Aug. 31, 2012, will be this type of blue moon; it will be the second full moon in one month.

The Other Kind of Blue Moon

The older definition, which is recorded in early issues of the Maine Farmer's Almanac, states that the blue moon is the third full moon in a season that has four full moons. Why would one want to identify the third full moon in a season of four full moons? The answer is complex, and has to do with the Christian ecclesiastical calendar.

Some years have an extra full moon—13 instead of 12. Since the identity of the moons was important in the ecclesiastical calendar (the Paschal Moon, for example, used to be crucial for determining the date of Easter), a year with a 13th moon skewed the calendar, since there were names for only 12 moons. By identifying the extra, 13th moon as a blue moon, the ecclesiastical calendar was able to stay on track.

For more background information on the controversy over the two definitions of blue moon, see the Sky and Telescope article, "What's a Blue Moon?" In it they explain how the two different definitions of a blue moon came about—including their own role in introducing the second, modern definition.

Sitting at anchor tonight... seems like it's been a very long time for this pleasure. Watching the last rays of the day turn to night when the phone rang... Ruth from R-Matey. She, Joe, Russ, Toni, Herb, and Wilma all sent greetings from the Ranger Tug gathering in Bremerton. They were listening to some music... Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville was in the background, and Ruth said it made her think of us. Nice to hear from C-Brats (they may have Ranger Tugs, but the 4 of them who had C-Dorys will always be C-Brats in our eyes).

Yep, we are wasting away again... (no job, no schedule, no worries). Thanks for the call, you 6.

Best wishes,
Jim

Hi Jim,

Sounds like you have finished your gig and are now ready for some cruising. This is probably the best part of the season. Hope you have a great time.

It was good to see you when we were in FH. Nice picture - could that be Parks Bay?

Steve

Hi Steve,

It was great to see you again, too. Good guess, but we are in Blind Bay. We spent a very nice evening on the hook, but little Izzy was rather upset this morning... it seems her "personal heated space" (the satellite TV receiver) was not plugged in. Plus, it was 53º in the cabin when I got up (well after sunrise) and turned on the Wallas for some heat.

All systems "go," and the Honda generator ran Joan's Keurig this morning and is now warming up the water heater.

I may change my mantra: Go comfortable, go now. 8)

Best wishes,
Jim

Blind bay is a great place to anchor. We were in there a couple of times on our 2009 trip - brings back a memory:

After anchoring one afternoon and starting dinner a sailboat came in and anchored about 50 to 60 yards away. While eating dinner we were treated to a show of them taking a bucket shower in the cockpit in the nude.

Not sure if they knew we were there since there were also a number of local, empty boats anchored around - but it looked like they were not too concerned about it. Karen enjoyed the scenery on the other side of the boat.

Steve

I'm glad to have the C-Dory. With the enclosed head w/shower, we don't have to scare the neighbors. We had been known to shower out on the nets on our trimaran. It would have to be a pretty hot day for me to consider a bucket shower here in the PNW... still, good hygiene is important. 8)

I did get to experience just how chilly the water is here today. We got the kayaks down - did some paddling and pedaling, including a bit of a bath for Wild Blue...

A trip to the mall on Shaw Island...

Even visited with another C-Brat (Harvey on Sleepy-C) today!

Best wishes,

Jim and Joan, It was nice to get to see you guys, and sorry for my part in that cold water thing. Made it home today. Left FH at 0600, and crossed Cattle Pass with a 90 foot cruiser headed for Bainbridge. JWM at 0900. Thanks for the offer, and I did get to meet Don. It did blow pretty good there. Interesting crossing, first third, 3-5 foot waves, started about a mile past Cattle Pass, and then past the separation buoy (Hein Bank), it flattened out. Last half was nearly flat and a beautiful ride.

Thanks again,

Harvey

Just enjoyed reading your blog entry. You know Jim, you do your best writing when you are, well, pumped. Glad to see you're finally getting in some cruising (I think).
