The Cruising Adventures of Wild Blue and crew...

Jim,
Yep..... :D I'm still out here. In Dec. I hooked up with the 44' in Jamaica, up from Colombia and Panama. Sailed (motored) east to St. Thomas. Was home by Christmas. Not all Caribbean cruising is sweet water. Boat is now approaching Guadeloupe headed for the hard in Trinidad. I hope to make the trip north after the bad weather season.
I miss my C-Dory.....and friends. :) I follow The Adventures of Wild Blue. :D :D

Hi Steve,

Great to hear from you! I was wondering if you were still monitoring here. Sounds like you've been getting plenty of boat time in, even without the benefit of a C-Dory. I think plenty of us here would enjoy hearing about your Caribbean travels - how 'bout a new thread on that? :D

How are things working out with the motorhome?

Don't be a stranger. Joan sends her regards, too.

Best wishes,
Jim

We are parked next to them at Island Mooring in Port Aransas. Winds here are currently 32 gusting to 39 with up to 45 forecast.

Hi Herb,

That is a BIG cat! And the boat is pretty good sized, too.

I saw that weather forecast for where you are right now - glad to hear you are tucked in (hopefully downwind of that cat) for a couple days. Have fun in Port A! Wish we were out there with you.

Greetings from the dry ol' desert,
Jim

I'm waiting for the movie. I see Jim being played by Jim Carrey and Joan being played by Jennifer Aniston. Of course I see both of them getting played by the cat. ;-)

It's my understanding that the studio is going for more realism... they're hoping for Abe Vigoda.

Holy cow! I just checked and reports of Abe's death are greatly exaggerated, as they say! I do not see Abe playing Jim though. Abe is too tall.

Charlie, had you but come to Seattle in January, you would have had the pleasure of meeting Jim, and it truly is a pleasure to spend time with Jim and Joan (no fear that Jim is blushing, modesty is not his best known trait). To put it bluntly, Jim cracks us up most of the time!

That "most" above is in reference to seafood or beer.

Wild Blue is home. We've been back a couple days, spent most of that time getting the 5th wheel unloaded and shined up before it went into storage. Did the "storage yard swap" yesterday, dropping off the RV and bringing home the boat.

This morning, one of our neighbors said to me, "Is that all you do?"

"Huh?"

"It seems like every time we see you, you're cleaning one of your toys."

He had a point. When we get back from a trip with the boat or RV, it is always in need of getting the road grime cleaned off. Whatever has been in storage always seems to come out in need of a bath. The 5th wheel had accumulated about 1,700 miles of bugs and road grime since its last bath. You do what you gotta do to keep the stuff up. And Wild Blue needed more than just a bath... it was time for her springtime wax job. And Joan is thoroughly cleaning the interior, since it will be our home for the summer.

Some of you might remember that last fall, I compounded and buffed the boat. It was looking good, but the brown "mustache" came back sooner than I expected. So, I put the Atwood Hull Cleaner to good use, and decided to wax her top to bottom before she goes back in the water.

The high today is supposed to be around 87º. Hazy. Not much breeze. Humidity... lots of humidity. So, I went after it early, thoroughly scrubbing the boat before the hottest part of the day. With a thin layer of clouds, I decided to start the waxing, working on the shady side of the boat. I am hoping to get the top and the other side waxed tomorrow morning. Then, all the stainless railings are going to need to be spiffied up.

I told my neighbor, "If you find yourself with too much free time on your hands, get a boat... there is always something that needs attention on a boat."

Happy Easter...

Today was "launch day" for Wild Blue. I was patient, not rushing my first mate. We had coffee, then some breakfast, then I started taking stuff to the boat: fenders, lines, PFDs, paperwork, etc. I put the local chip in the chartplotter. Just waiting for the "OK"...

When the time was appropriate (I don't know how that is determined), we hooked Big Red up to the boat trailer and pulled her around to the ramp. All was going well with the launch; the motor fired right up (I had test run it yesterday). Joan started rinsing the trailer while I put up the antennas. As she pulled away with the truck to put it in the parking lot, I discovered I had no power to the radios... or the autopilot... or the horn... or the wipers... or any lights... oh, crap!

When she got back to the boat, I had to tell her that we weren't going for a ride, we were heading right for our dock. Some stuff was working: the fuel flow meter, trim indicator. It was a lovely day, about 79º at 11:00, a light breeze, sunny, and the humidity seemed a bit lower than the past couple days... this would really be a good time to go out and shake down the boat after being in storage.

Instead, we pulled the boat around to our dock. Seems that in those 15 minutes, the temp went up, the humidity went WAY up, and my patience went down. We got the boat tied at our dock, and I got my multi-meter to see if I could track down the problem. About 30 seconds later, I was soaking wet with sweat. I got out our red-neck air conditioner and put it in the front window... it ain't pretty, but it might mean the difference between survival and expiration by extreme sweatiness.

I let the boat cool down for a bit and went in the house to hydrate. Back to the boat, I started trying to track down where the power quit. Now, keep in mind that I am no electronics or wiring kinda guy. You know that old saying, "Even a blind chicken gets a kernel of corn once in a while"? Well, after only about 45 minutes and a lot of talking to myself, I found where the power stopped: it was a connection to one of the main busses. I put it back together and climbed out of the v-berth (where all the wiring comes together) to see if that helped... the VHF crackled to life, the chartplotter and autopilot beeped, the cabin lights lit! Hmmm, this is my own little miracle today.

I went back in the house, dancing the Happy Dance! We may still get a boat ride in today! More rehydrating, and I went out to the boat to take out the air conditioner and get her ready to to head out.

It felt good... really good! I checked my log: one day short of 3 months since we had her on the water. It felt like a lot more than that. As we cruised down the ship channel, I started checking out everything on the boat. I need to put water on to check the fresh water pumps, but everything seems to be functional... that weight on my shoulders lifted.

Joan took the helm while I walked around the boat. Did I mention: this feels good!

OutTheBackE.jpg

All the excursion boats were out, and yes, we all saw dolphins. The excursion boats had good crowds onboard; here's a few of them...

DblSunshineE.jpg

We made our way out the jetties. Looking over to the beach on South Padre Island, it was a sea of beach umbrellas and tents - the huge crowds are still here.

We had been chugging along at displacement speed while checking everything out. On the way back in, I put the coals to it: 24 mph, burning 7.8 gallons per hour... just over 3 miles per gallon. Non-boat owners are probably gasping right now, but that is pretty good mileage when running at that speed... for a boat. With gas prices the way they are, I doubt that we'll be doing a lot of that speed, but we wanted to make sure that all was right.

There's more work to finish: the bimini needs to be treated with waterproofing and put back on, I need to check out the fresh water system, the windows need to be treated with Rain-X, and the window tracks need to be scrubbed out and treated with slippery stuff. But, Wild Blue is back in the water, and I have several weeks to get that all done.

Best wishes,
Jim

Jim,

Happy Easter, and glad all is running fine now after your own special miracle. Enjoy the warm, sunny tropical tip for a while. We are working on warming things up for you up here. It was something close to 60 in the islands today, and it was beautiful here too. Two ferry rides and no dolphins today though. Maybe next time.

Sounds like Wild Blue is pretty spiffed up. Good job.

It was a beautiful sunrise up here too. Color on Sequim Bay, and great colors in the clouds over PT on my way to w@%k this morning. More clouds than you had, and we didn't make 80 today but it was a beautiful day. Thnks for sharing your boat ride sunrise.

Nice post and pictures, Jim.. We are freshly back from Florida and up to our eyeballs in overhauling a planter... The Charlotte Ann is sitting in the yard at the tent and awning shop where they will repair/replace the top cover over the cockpit, deal with a bent bow, and inspect every square inch of the side canvas and isinglass and screens... Also, the aluminum fittings on the biminin frame are pitting from salt water but they will go another winter and then I'll replace them with SS... More boat units...

Anyway, this morning instead of a boat ride I get to haul the 10 ton flat bed trailer across the county to Frankenmuth (think chicken) to bring back a plow (5 sixteens for those who speak plow)... My plow has developed problems and at this moment it is quicker to purchase a working plow than it is to spend days overhauling one (another entry for the winter shop schedule - that is already too long)... I am putting a couple of donkey pastures into crop production and the plowing only got half done last fall before the rains came and turned the ground into bottomless muck (sigh)
Tell ya what - you come here and wrench on machinery and I'll run your boat out into the Gulf every day, seems fair to me...

Hey Denny-o,

Well, that is a tempting offer, but I'm afraid I must decline. While you were in Florida cruising, we were in the desert in Arizona... so some boat time for us is in order, too. 8) It isn't all playtime right now: we're doing some work on the boat and trailer before we head north in a few weeks.

Not sure what 5 sixteens means on a plow, but in my former career it meant that I was probably going to be photographing cheerleaders. These days, I'm glad to be working on boats.

Good luck with your tasks; hope you find some time for that tug soon.

Best wishes,
Jim

Hi Joe,

Thanks for thinking of us. Yes, someone sends us the link to that video about once a week. Still fun to watch, though.

We've been busy with lots of "projects" on the house, boat, trailer, and 5th wheel, but managed to get out on Wild Blue - it's been a week...

Yes, there were f-d dolphins, ships, pretty blue water, and glorious weather.

Little Izzy didn't get to go this time. Here's what she looked like when we got back (just to get some cute cat content)...

Time is getting short before we start our trek north.

Jim

How do I find your book for my kindle. I'm doing something wrong as the Kindle store isn't showing it listed, but your info seems to indicate that it is available.????

Well, as a long time cat owner I recognize that Izzy look... You are going to pay for going off and leaving her... Just like a hockey player that just got a cheap shot from behind, as the hitter skates away you can see that look as the lips move, memorizing the jersey number... Paybacks are heck...

Harry, go to this site.

http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/27714

Lots of formats available, we got our kindle version that way, couldn't find it in the store either!

I've bought many copies, both the paperback and digital, it's a great book!
