tempus fugit.

This photo was taken just 21 Years ago, in December 2003, on lake Union.. That's Pat Anderson in Daydream in the foreground and JoeP and me in Miss Mirth following. The old ferry Kalakala is tied up in the background. The next day it was towed up to Anacortes. What happened to it?Kalakala_Daydream_Miss_Merth.jpg

I think it ended its days in the Hylebos Waterway in Tacoma. That's the last place I saw it (circa 2010?). It did not look like it was in any condition to go anywhere else! I remember seeing it in the early 50's. It was the coolest thing ever.

Thanks for the link, Tom.

". . . The Kalakala last saw water when it was towed from its slip on Tacoma’s Hylebos Waterway, to a scrapyard in Tacoma, to a nearby dry dock on the Blair Waterway, where it was dismantled. The Coast Guard deemed it a hazard in fear of sinking in waters used for commercial shipping traffic in 2011, when it began to take on water and was visibly listing. . . ."

When I saw it on Hylebos, it was definitely near sinking. I guess they were able to keep it afloat long enough for its short trip to its final dry docking.

As Marty says, tempis fugit. When I was dumbstruck by the Kalakala as a kid, the Smith Tower was still several years away from being dethroned as the tallest building in Seattle (maybe on the whole West Coast?), and I-5 was barely a gleam in DDE's eye.

Thanks friends for the information. I do appreciate it. According to the article it was also called "The Silver Swan". I like that. The article also states that it was 88 years old when dismantled in 2015. That happens to be my age. Something to think about.
