Tear in Fender

Patty here. Tried pumping up a flat fender and realized it had a one-inch tear in it. Any way to repair that? Or must I make another deposit at my local Bank of West Marine? No tear in the canvas cover, by the way, so do you think it "popped" from massive pressure against a dock?

Not sure which ones you have, but if you have Taylor Made, they have a lifetime warranty against tears from bursting. It excludes punctures, so I guess it depends on how your tear happened.

Not sure how one would tell if one was burst or punctured if you didn't see it happen, but it doesn't hurt to ask for a replacement...

Here's a link to the Taylor Made warranty page.

The most likely cause is a cut or tear from something sharp. Might check out the dock for protruding nails, screws, bolts or gnarly barnacles. It did it's job, better than a tear in the boat!

Don't even try to fix it. Go down to the nice store and pick out your favorite color. Or......do they have a marine swap meet near you? Lots of stuff for cheap. I pick up fenders for $1 to $2. Of course you will come home with some other super bargains you didn't really need. Last time I picked up 4 teak flag staffs for 50 cents each. Sure look nice stored on a shelf in the shop.

Later, Roy
