Teak or oak or.....?

Having trouble figuring out what kind of wood was used for the exterior handles on the roof and sides of the smaller C-Dory's. The ones I'm taking off are extremely weathered and don't seem to be teak. Would they have used any other types of wood?
 
It is difficult to say what type of wood you have, looking at the photos in your album did not help. I would say that it does not mater what type of wood it is it can be refinished and reinstalled. Sand it down, re-stain, and seal with a high grade varnish. This will need to be done every couple of years to keep it looking good.

Adam, where you live, if the boat has been outdoors a lot, teak will be weathered but sound. Oak will likely have black mold on it and possibly some rot where water stands. I bet it is teak. Sand with 150 grit, wipe with diluted bleach to kill mold spores, and varnish or put outdoor polyurethane on it. Multiple coats. Varnish remains more flexible and will not check as quickly as the PU. Use the solvent based coatings, not the water based.
 
All of the C Dories I have seen used teak on the railings. Cetol is OK in the PNW, but when you get into high UV areas, it does not hold up as well. Cetol is also subject to abrasion, such as power cords rubbing on railing will wear it off.
 
If you go with the Cetol, then cover the first coats with the clear gloss. this will make it last longer. If there is a "ding" in the Cetol, you can just scrub it with one of the E 3M scrub pads and then touch up with Cetol.
