Teak and Holly flooring

Has anyone covered the cabin floor of their Tom Cat or other C Dory with either fake or real teak and holly flooring?

The orginial fiberglass floor seems aesthetically lacking to most owners, as a result many are covered with some form of carpeting. Traditional wood teak and holly is quite expensive and getting hard to come by in all but plywood venere form. But there are some new vinyl teak and holly materials being used by the boat builders in the area (actually as an $ upgrade over the tradition wood product), that appear very wear resistant, and seemingly easy to apply. All in cost for materials for a Tom Cat look like about $600.

If someone has done this, photos and comments would be appreciated.

Enter "Destiny" in the site search box to see album/pics of Peter Brownell's TC255 outfitted by Marc Grove at Wefings...a beautiful vinyl teak job, the only one I've seen in person and it looked much better than the photos. But I wouldn't want to install it myself, it'd be slippery when wet and we'd probably want a throw rug over it. We were going to pay the pros to do exactly the same thing, when Tom Schulke (C-Otter) showed us the Deckadence marine carpet he put in his cockpit (used on high end boats, see Performanceunderfoot.com). Water, sand, dirt goes right through it, it's soft on bare feet and doesn't slip, stays down in the cockpit at 65 MPH and soft enough we couldn't break a hip if we fell on it. Pulls away with one hand to access the fishboxes or cabin storage lockers. Custom size it with standard shears. Clean it by backwashing with a garden hose. Expensive, but feels like it will last 10-20 years if not left out in the sun (yeah, same for vinyl teak too). 10 times better than the Cabela's Premium Marine carpet it replaced. Everyone who stepped on it at Hontoon liked it although James on Molly Brown thought it wouldn't do well with dog hair. It's 100% extruded PVC material with no organic components for mold/mildew. Just posted some pics for you page 9 in the Cat O' Mine album. PM an address if you'd like me to mail you a scrap sample. Post pics if you do the Teak Project. Thanks again, Tom, for us NOT going there. A boat needs wood flooring like it needs granite countertops (no offense to the Cutwaters that have both, and a wine cooler from Lowe's).
PS if you or anyone has a Jabsco 18590 series blackwater macerator pump, replace the brass rods that hold it together with the stainless steel upgrade kit BEFORE it demonstrates The First Warning Sign of Impending Failure (which is to blow apart, slinging sewage over anything within 10 feet).

HERE is the product at the walmart of boating.
Pretty easy to install cause it flexes in to odd shapes after making a template .We are about to do a 2006 25 C Dory with it .

Yes, it's teak and holly plywood over 3/4" plywood. It would have been twice as costly to do it in solid (as would have been my preference). I had the teak edging milled at our local hardwood place. I teak oiled it and then applied 4 coats of Profin gloss. The Profin has a VERY hard finish and I'm pretty sure that will protect the wood for years to come. If I see any deterioration, it's easy enough to put on another coat or two

I would have preferred to do it in 3 sections, but the overhangs on the cabinetry only left me so much room to lay the sections in. It's nice to have it removable.
 
I recently had the carpet on my Nordic Tug removed and replaced with Amtico in a teak and holly pattern. Amtico is a really tough "luxury vinyl plank" type of flooring—scratch resistant and impervious to water. Nordic Tug, Aspen, Hatteras, and some other high-end builders are using Amtico in their new builds.

Here are some pictures before we got all the final trim done. So far I'm happy with the result.

Sam that looks really nice. Thanks for sharing that. Have you noticed any difference in either the insulation effect or any sound level when running changes.

It sure looks nicer than any carpet.

I was cleaning out the locker under the galley sink when I dropped the bucket of soapy water. This came pouring out of the hole where the foot pump is for the sink. It took but a couple of minutes to lift up my rubber backed carpet and dry everything out. Carpet does have it's advantages!

Following the above input I decided to install PlasTeak vinyl flooring in our Tom Cat. Ordered the materials from their website. You need about 10 linear ft of vinyl which comes 6 ft wide, plus a padding material and epoxy glue. All in cost is about $800. It takes a day or so to make templates and install the stuff, but it really does dress up the boat. Photos follow.

Valkyrie did it using Plas-Dek material. There are photos in his file. I saw his and liked it, so last fall I went to their office in Copley, OH (we live nearby) and snagged a suitable offcut from their remnants. Cold weather and other jobs have kept me from putting it in the boat yet so there's no photo of mine -- see Valkyrie for good ones. Since it is entirely trapped by the cabin floor I plan to roll it up and store it indoors over the winters. Not sure if I'll do the cockpit (outside) as Valkyrie did. It's beautiful but expensive.
