Talk Patty into a Radar Arch

OK, I guess we know some of the pros and cons of a radar arch - I personally don't want one myself - but Patty wants to be sure while we still have time to have it be a factory installation...talk her into it, give it your best shot!

Here's one pro that I don't believe anyone has previously mentioned. The arch provides numerous additional "hand holds" when ingressing and egressing the vessel and moving around topside.

(Of course, you know you ain't gonna clear under the "slough" bridge between Everett and Marysville without the bridge tender opening it for you!) :disgust

I don't understand. If you don't want one, why do you wish Patty to be talked into one?

If you're (both of you'res) not really sure, it makes no difference to wait and add it later. Even though it is a "factory installation", they just bolt it on without modification to the building process, don't they? You can still drill holes in that fiberglass after it has completely cured. I can bring a cordless drill to the christening and prove it to you, if you like.

But if you're (both of you'res) certain you will end up with one of the things, it would probably be best to get it right now. It might affect your initial cabin top gizmo mounting plans.

What's David gonna do? Aren't you guys suppossed to start out matching and then personalize to taste?

This is going to be so fun watching the bunch of you (three CBs that we know of and one more pretty sure) who bought 25s at the SBS drive yourselves whacko with the rapid fire decisions. Kind of hard to feel any sympathy for your collective plight, though.

Patty here. You know, I BEG the man to let me read his stuff before he posts it so I can catch the ambiguities, mistakes, and just wrong things! I don't want the arch, so I don't know WHY he said to talk me into it. I just noticed every newly outfitted boat among our group has the arch so I needed to know why. There must be a good reason. I'm still waiting to hear what it is.

Oh that's easy. None of the husbands want the things, so they have their friends talk the wives into getting one. That's kinda how people wind up owning dogs, too.

OK Pat and Patty,

Here's two cents worth from one of the arch brothers, GET ONE!

There has been lots said about them but since I have and enjoy our I can speak to their handiness. Great as a hand hold and all that but since you're moving up in boat size and look forward to having radar and additional extended cruising you may also be thinking of taking along a dingy since the bigger boat just gets a little tougher to slide up to the beach and bail out over the bow. Storing that dingy gets a lot easier if you don't have to drape it over the top of the radar. Also the additional height of the arch will take a weaker radar and allow it to preform better since it is now elevated higher. And did I mention that your stern/anchor light can be mounted aft and above the radome and never need to be removed. All the wiring from the arch can also go down the tubes, out the the base outboard of the house side and then back in through the cabin side under the side of the top. That just cut out a bunch of holes on the top that may become a source of leaks later.

If I were to get another boat an arch would be a must have for me.

Tim

P.S. Listen to the folks that have or have had one.

Patty,

This is the truth - research it. If the radome is at head level for some one standing outside the cabin, they can suffer brain damage from transmissions coming from the radome. I don't know any more than that.

I know some people are exempt :wink A steel helmet my protect the rest.

I'll chime in from Spokane (here for the week-end). I am pretty sure I am going to have the arch put on at the factory. I want to carry the inflatable again. And all the antennae can go on the arch. I am going to add radar at some point , hopefully before the Desolation Sound trip in Sept. And if "they" worry about a cell phone causing brain damage, just imagine what a 2K radome might do. I'm already thinking I am a little brain dead sometimes.

At this point I am thinking the Garmin 3006C is what I am going to go with . Smaller profile in front of the window.

If the trio that made Jeffs sales day can come back together maybe we can get a three-fer price on the arch. Instead of $650-700 we can get the thing for $625-675. What do you think Jeff? Or make us a better offer..

every thing said about the arch is true. better place for the antennas, great place for the radar, makes room for the dingy, and its a great place to put rod holders so they are out of the way completely when fishing or not fishing. i have had my extra rods stored at the back of the boat while fishing and the damm fish will try to go around the back and you have to left your rod way up to get around them or reach around then and change hands. you could put the rods on the side of the cabin but forget walking around the side of the cabin. some people have put then next to the door , but they will not fit there with the top in place unless you brake the rod down. by having them in the rod holders on the arch they are out of the way and i can leave then rigged up for quick change outs when fishing. just my reasons for having them.

The radar arch question is one of personal preference, certainly not necessity. Dingy and rods can be stored just as easily without the arch, just use some creative thinking! Having viewed your 22s, I would say that each of you has more than enough engineering skill to solve any storage problem.

The question is: do you want an arch, not do you need one! :?

Good luck.

Pat and Patty, get the arch it is worth it. It is also a great place to hang the laundry.

I go through all the trouble to explain the technical issues... antenna placements, radar placement, rod storage, dinghy storage, hand hold safety improvement, northwest looks, anchor light visibility, ad infinitum and Fred sums it up in one sweet sentence...geesh! :wink

I don't see the downside of arches and would have one to hold up a sun awning if for nothing else. I am talking of a stern mounted arch. The extras are: kayak carrier, radar mount, antenna mount, clothes line, solar panel holder, anchor light, spot light etc.

As you can see at the photos, Jammin is, if anything, "over arched"

Hey Pat! I saw some neat arches at the show, and one particular set caught my eye... because the front mount had pins & the back mount had swivel mount as to let the arch back when traveling....or attempting to go under a bridge on the waterways.... My need would be for the radar to clear a roof mounted AC unit. I will look for the photos I took at the show.

Hi C-Brats

We are Bill & Chris Carli from Friday Harbor, and we just purchased a cd-25 at the Seattle boat show. We ordered a radar arch, because they are so handy to put all the stuff that you want sticking out of the top of the boat. However I don't know why people mount them at the aft of the cabin then place them so high ( looks rather !!!!) so a dinghy can be stored under the arch. We are thinking of putting the arch all the way forward, and having it only 6 to 8 inches above the cabin top. That way all dinghys ( we like hard rowing dinghies ) can be slid right on top of the pilothouse from the cockpit. I think the only reason that the arch is aft is tradition due to fisherman wanting their fishing poles up high and out of the way.
Also just to mention that we have been life long sailors who are switching to c-dorys. They really are such beautiful boats.
Anyone cruising into Friday Harbor, please contact us, email us for contact info.
thanks
bill and chris carli
