Again, PayPal is great...if you know the vendor. PayPal is a godsend for small business types, handimen, yard mowers etc. that enables them to not have to fight over bounced checks etc. I have paid my yard service that way. I would never use PayPal for an untested business though.

A nice c-brat for oregon saw my boat for 14k and clicked on the link to learn more. This took him to contact form. after filling the form out he was contacted and told that my boat was in Maine?? and that the owner was in Spain and not coming back and just wanted to get rid of it??? they would ship it to the west coast after receiving a cashiers check and if he was not happy with the boat they would return his money in short order. yeah right. what scum.
as of last night I could not find the ad anywhere and hope that no one has fallen for this. I would hate to know that my boat ad was used to steal from someone.

That sounds like the classic Nigerian scam with a few new twists added in gor good measure. Too bad these people can not be put away.
Here's my opinion, based on >15 yrs in law enforcement:
This scam is easy because people are A)stupid B)naive C)greedy. Who wouldn't want to pay only $14K for a C-Dory that's valued at >$40K? :roll: In the other VW thread I referenced there have already been multiple victims to the same guy, pulling the same scam; some lost hundreds of dollars, some thousands. All "deposits" on an "unbelievable deal they just couldn't pass up". Sound familiar? If it's just too good to be true...
Scammers like this rip people off across state lines, which makes local prosecution nearly impossible. It's not a Fed crime that ANY Fed LE agency has the resources to follow up on; they got MUCH bigger fish to catch at that level and there's only so many resources to go around.
So, go after a BIG fish or a little fish...them's the facts. What it comes down to is "buyer beware". Is it frustrating? Yep, but again, them's the facts.
Don't blame the messenger. :wink:

Tom - as an aside - and I probably don't need to say this (but I will anyway) - Since your craigslist account was hijacked and the password changed, I hope you have different passwords (and maybe usernames) on any other account connected to $'s. If not, you probably want to change all of those soon.
