Wow.....am I impressed with Sidney B.C!!!!!!!!! Beautiful marina. Nice, walkable town with reasonable prices. Terrific walking trails too.

Arrived two days ago and saw Butchart Gardens. Nice....although too crowded. Did Victoria yesterday, in particular the wax museum, then headed home early. Too much city. We all agreed Sidney was the place to be.

Today....Sidney, exclusively, then leaving tonight for a mooring ball at Jones Island.

Tomorrow, return to Friday Harbor and then home.

Greg,

Glad you liked my old home town. My parents bought their home there for $6,000, on 3/4 of an acre, right next door to the bird santuary off McDonald Road.

Sure hope you got Fish and Chips at "Fish On 5th" there. What they don't do in fancy, they make up for in fine quality fixins. And Nanimo Bars at the Sidney Bakery. Don't just get one, they are habit forming.

Well Harvey.....we did both of what you suggested. Last night dinner, as recommended by a local, was at Fish on 5th and it was terrific! Evaded the Sidney Bakery but will try to remember to indulge next year. If it's anything like the one in Poulsbo, mi waste tis in trubble. My wife fell in love with Janet's Tea Shop. I really loved Serious Coffee. Equivalent to the San Juan Coffee house in Friday Harbor.

Interesting to talk to locals about Canada's economics and taxation. Amazing people can afford the housing, gas prices, and taxes there.

Another couple of observations. No obesity. People seemed fit and healthy. Finally, everyone was very polite. Enjoyed the English flavor to the English language. Washroom instead of bathroom, etc.

Second that. Sidney is one of our favorite places. You can get a bus to downtown Victoria or to Butchart Gardens, lots of small bookstores, really nice marina and pleasant people. Interesting walks and good restaurants. Its only about 10 miles from Roche Harbor. We'll be there in a few days.

Using the Marina discount, we rented a car for 1.5 days, though only paid for 24 hours. Cost for the minivan was $72. The sedan's are $42 but none were available. Originally we were going to take the bus but the schedule and bus changes looked too tricky. Instead, we rented a car at 4 pm, went to Butchart, then did Victoria the next day, returning the car after hours that evening. Worked nicely for us. Total gas bill was $25.

Next year, we'll probably use public transportation and simply skip Victoria.

Greg,
Never thought of renting a car there. How did you get or find out about the "Marina Discount"?

The marina office. They were trying to help us with the bus schedule. Seeing the glazed looks in our eyes, they quickly suggested an alternative.
Good call. We could have easily ended up in Alaska.

Gregg, Thanks, just wondering if it was part of a Boat U.S. membership or something local that the marina offered. Thanks, I'm with you, bus schedules make me nuts

Nope....it was part of a deal the marina has with the rental car agency. We were given a nice gift pack upon arrival full of nice deals from the local merchants.

Thanks Greg, sounds like the Sidney Marina is boater friendly, and so is the town. Really looking forward to getting up there on the boat sometime.

Sidney is definitely one of our favorite marinas to stay in. The marina is beautiful and the town is super accessible. We almost went last weekend, we were on the west side of the San Juans searching for whales and Sidney was beckoning but we resisted.
