Storage Solutions

I have finished a project that has been on my list of things to do. Two storage shelves under the galley counter. Both made of some kind of plastic that I had laying around the yard. The top shelf is eight inches wide and the bottom is five inches wide. Both have a lip to keep stuff from falling out. I have used aluminum 90 degree pieces with stainless screws to fasten to the wall. The back of these shelves are supported on the lip of the lapstrake chine. Pictures have been uploaded to my album.

Now I want to make a book shelf that will hold charts and guide books. I am thinking of making it on the starboard side in the forward bunk. Using the existing bolts of the cleat and bow rail to support it. I'm having a hard time coming up with a good design for this. Any suggestions?

What other storage solutions have you come up with?

We used Hamocks for the forward cabin--and also "sail boat sheet storage bags"-
Hard shelves foreward can take up room. But epoxy and /5200 can hold wooden shelves. If the material is a high density poly propelene, then you may just have to bolt or screw it.

Like Bob, we use hammocks in the forward berth. They're almost infinitely expandable, nothing falls out, and they're easily removed or replaced. I just attached them to the exposed ends of through bolts from deck cleats. They don't encroach at all on sleeping room, and they won't leave a bruise if you collide with one as long as you're not stowing framing hammers and pipe wrenches in them.

I'm waiting for our boat to come back from service so I can't check the installation method of our forward shelves. I believe there are blocks glassed in on the inside with 5200 and stainless screws. I can check tomorrow when I pick it up and load a picture or two if you like.

The shelves that came on our boat are a bit too wide for me and I bump the port side all night, drives me crazy. I'm planning on removing them and going to the hammock method for storage.

I've got a rack made of 1/4 x 1 in oak. mounted on the inside roof over the table. Its 12" deep and about 36" wide, works great and is out of the way the rack is mounted with about 1 1/2" spacers that make up the thickness of the storage. Sorry I don't have a album with photo's but I could email you one. Havn't been able to figure out the photo thing for this site yet. michael

Michael, first you need an album. If you ask Mike or Bill (the nerds), they'll set up one for you. Then there are photo posting instructions in the Nerd Shack forum.
