Before I decide to replace the steering wheel on my 22'Cruiser, are there any "tricks"? Do I need a steering wheel puller? Also, shaft diameter so if I decide to replace it, I get the correct fitting wheel.
Thanks in advance.
A puller would be in order, once the wheel is off you'll find a standard 3/4" tapered shaft. I swapped mine out for a smaller Boaters World white plastic jobbie. The old wheel wasn't to eager to give up it's post but a two jaw puller convinced it. I sure like the smaller wheel
Some of he standard type replacement wheels are of larger diameter than the original factory supplied ones. If you go for a larger diameter wheel, it will decrease the clearance between your thighs and the wheel. Check the current fit out and compare the present diameter wheel you have with the replacement wheel. Can you accommodate the larger one? Joe.
Was the 12'' diameter the OEM on your old boat? I've never seen a 12" wheel on a CD! My original 13 1/2" was replaced with a 14 1/2" which seemed a bit tight at first, but better in the long run. Joe.
Thanks for all the input. As always, it is best to ask the group first before proceeding. I will measure, borrow a steering wheel puller, and proceed.
