Steering sytem advice for CD 19 Angler

Once again searching for some inside information on how to keep our
C Dory operational without breaking the bank which is still low on assets !

2005 CD 19' Angler that has been worked pretty hard the last few years inside and outside of the San Francisco Bay mostly fishing for Halibut and
Crab. Just finished servicing the Honda motor and was told that the steering system is running to tight , rust and wear on the cables and replacement is in order. ( sounds like I should have been more diligent )Quoted $900 to redo with same mechanical system or $1750 to replace with Hydrolics.
My question , anything I can do now to service as it sits and feel okay about getting another season as is ? If I do replace
what system and does my quoted price seem to be in order ? Any chance I could do some of the work myself if my skills are on the change oil and spark plug level ? Safety is an important issue as my son is out alone most of the time .
Any opinions are appreciated.

Just my opinion but if you can change your oil, then you can replace your steering. Provided of course you stay with the same type and brand of system. You can change the entire system or just the cable which will be much easier. Look at your present system and then check on E Bay. There are complete Teleflex no feedback systems on there for around $160 plus shipping or just the cable for around $120. I am going to change my steering out before this next boating season and if I can do it, anyone can. Doing my own maintenance is the only way I can continue to enjoy my favorite pastime.

Agree with the above. The changing out of a tele flex Non feed back steering system is pretty much plug and play. There used to be a system where you could pump grease into the cables and prevent rust--I have not seen this on the market on the last few years.

In last years West Marine catalogue the NFB helm is $130 and the cable will be about $185-total some where in the $350 range with fittings etc. A lot better than paying an extra $500 for labor!

If you wanted to put in an auto pilot, then the hydraulic helm might be wise, but for your use, the NFB steering helm station should do well.
 
Agree with the above, replaced it on my 22' classic and only problem was that the engine had to be taken loose to get the cable pulled out. No big problem other than you may have to borrow an engine hoist to hold the engine up while you work the cable.

I wil concur with the others. Normaly I am a person that is not allowed to handle tools of any kind without adult supervision. Even I was able to replace the cable on my 17' Bristol Skiff a couple years ago.
 
Quite a few years back, TyBoo replaced a NFB steering system, probably on his CD-22, which preceded the present CD-25 Cruise Ship.

There was a thread about it, and how to cut the cable to get it out w/o removing the motor.

Will try to find it! (All according to my 69 year-old memory!)

I remember the same thing as Joe.

It seems that if an old steering cable is simply going to get tossed in the trash that the quickest, easiest way is best.

How about a Sawzall ?
