Didn't look up the link but just want to add that we have been using SPOT as a great adjunct to our float plan procedure and it has been very successful so far. (Although we have not sunk or run out of fuel to really test the response times  . We have been using it in both "check in-OK" and "tracking" modes and find it very efficient. Works like this.
At the launch ramp: Turn SPOT on and do a "Check in-OK"
At the Dock prior to leaving, Turn off, then back on and go to "Tracking mode"
Tracking runs, leaving a breadcrumb (waypoint mark) every 10 minutes.
At the end of the run or end of the day: Turn off SPOT, then back on and do a "Check in -OK".
So at the end of the day and there is no "Check in -=OK" on the phone message or e-mail at my sisters, I get a phone call to see if we forgot to check in. If there is no answer, they look up the tracking website to see where the tracking stopped. If it is in the middle of the water, they call the Coaties, if we realize that we forgot to check in, a quick call sorts it out. If there is no cell service, we have to remember to do the "Check in - OK" or the CG will be doing a location search for SleepyC.
A reasonable service for the minimal fee IMHO.
(Disclaimer - I have no interest in SPOT, other than using it as an added safety feature for our boating pleasure.)
