Spectacular Dinoflagellates

The little creatures that cause phosphorescence have been spectacular the last couple of weekends. Maybe it’s because we anchor up on the outside in calm weather instead of up in a cove; we often see seals, otter, walrus, porpoise the occasional whale and those Dinoflagellates doing their thing. I’m sure the brats down south see phosphorescence more often because it gets dark in the summer, here it never really gets dark from late May into August.

Jody watched seals swimming below the boat this weekend glowing in phosphorescence as they swam through the water. The other night when I had to take in some anchor the line stacked on the deck sparkled when I disturbed it and the anchor line phosphoresced down in the deep, way cool.

Then there was a piece of fish on the cutting table that just glowed, that was strange.

Of course the most frequent occurrence of phosphorescence is when nature calls in the middle of the night and we witness the spectacle as the contents are dispensed over the side.

Just another magical spectacle of nature.
