Hi all. Carolyn and I are running south out of Rio Vista Delta area today for Southern California spent almost 2 weeks in the Delta area including overnight into the big city SF. Anyone have suggestions of places to launch/ cruise between LA and San Diego? Mission parameters are simple. We are looking for temperatures mid 70's and less moisture in the air than BC/Washington/Oregon/northern California. Marina del Rey? Newport? San Diego Bay? Must sees? Avoids? Thanks so much friends! Mission Bay and San Diego Harbor are must floats I think.
 
If you have the time and don't mind a launch site north of the Los Angeles basin, I would recommend the Channel Islands. Launch out of Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard or Ventura Harbor in Ventura and visit the wonders of Anacapa or Santa Cruz Islands. The 18-23 mile crossing(depending on which island you visit) of the Santa Barbara Channel can get dicey at times in the winter months, but if well timed, the rewards can be great.

Thanks guys will check it out. Will go into Monterey and Carmel today. See if we can tow the small streets of Carmel.
 
We had lunch at Fisherman's wharf in Monterey today. Very nice gorgeous sunny day. Decided to backtrack to Seaside area so we could uncouple the boat to explore better. Bring money if you come here! They say it is after all The Monterey Peninsula. $70 a night at the Dunes RV. Off season rates. I always tell folks we are independently wealthy yacht owners, then they see the boat. Darn good thing being rich and all. Yeeehaw. When in Rome..... We will tour the world famous aquarium tomorrow and then go thru Carmel afternoon. See if Mr Eastwood is at his mission restaurant. I went thru Carmel a few years back. Not a great spot to tow thru. Teeny little streets. This rv spot is one of those that have the really big diesel pushers with Escalade toads. Kerri On looks right at home in there. We Walmarted last night in Morgan Hills. First wallyworld camp of the trip. Having fun getting south. After getting parked we went to the beach a quarter mile away and lost the shoes for a walk in the white sand beach. Really nice. The water is the same temperature as we get off Tofino west coast Vancouver Island. Not a lot of boating ops here in Monterey, but a lot of boats. They seem to daysail out on the bay mostly.
but we aren't going to splash here. We'll head further down towards LA for that. Cheers from George and Carolyn.
 
I would agree with spending time in San Diego Harbor. The Chula Vista Marina is down South part of the Bay, but has an RV park, and ramp--should be warmest you will find in S. Calif--and maybe the cheapest.

In the Los Angeles/Long Beach area, I recommend Sunset Aquetic Harbor--Huntington Harbor ramp and marina. Nice houses on the water. I could afford one of these 40 years ago....There is probably the best on the water display of decorations during the Christmas Season in Huntington Harbor. The parade is not to be missed. Also Newport Bay has great decorations and boat parade. More pricey at Newport. If you think the "Dunes" in Monetray is expensive--Newport may be more...

A trip to Catalina would be nice--both Avalon and the Isthums this time of the year. However, it can be cold in S. Calif, and windy. Do your crossing before 10 AM to avoid chop and wind. Although you may find 70's in this area--there is dense fog predicted for tomorrow AM...and Rain the week of Dec 1, with some lower temps.

Also be very aware of "Santa Ana" winds, which are catabatic winds, and can reach velocities of 90 knots off shore....can be very dangerous for small boats.
There is usually good warning. But this is the time of the year.
