Sonar Transducer Location

I recently purchased and installed a Garmin 7sv Sonar/Fishifinder. First time out I was loosing the bottom above 10knts. Tried turning to the left and no difference. Tried turning to the right, no difference. I may have it angled to far towards the bow and would try making that adjustment next.

The transducer is located about where the previous Raymarine unit had been. 24" in from the starboard outside Chine. About 10" away from the center of the permatrim equipped outboard. We have Lenco trim tabs and the transducer is about 13" inward of that. I was wondering where others have found the Happy Spot to be on a 22' cruiser as far as where to mount their transducer. I mounted a piece of 3/4" starboard on the transom to fasten the transducer to the boat. That will allow me to easily change the mounting position. It might save us some trial and error trips to see just where others have mounted theirs in regards of distance from the outside chine.

Thanks

Doug, I don't have the measurements for sure but my Raymarine transducer is only about 2 inches from the inboard edge of the trim tab. You can just barely see it in the pix.

I'm sure you know that the water surface conditions will affect the bottom holding ability and that varies as your speed increases. Not being a Garmin I hope you get some Garmin users responses soon.

I suspect the angle of installation may be an issue. I have a very similar transducer and the 1041xs, and my son has the 9SV on his 25 cruise ship. Both hold the bottom at up to 25 mph (probably faster) and down as far as 300 feet (probably more).

Have the body just below the bottom of the boat, straight down when the boat is running on a plane.
