The solution to the above is to use IMAP, not POP3. That is what I do with gmail and I have my email sync'd to my desktop, my laptop, and my Blackberry.

IMAP works if you also have an Exchange Server, which we didn't. It also works if you use GMAIL which we don't. The Blackberry's basically left us hanging unless we spent a fair amount of money.
 
Only a bit off-topic...

Got a software upgrade on the Droid phone this morning. NICE, functional new features. A different look to the galleries, weather/news/sports in one app, Google Goggles, websites seem to load even faster, but the most interesting: pinch to zoom, like on the iPhone and iPod Touch. You can zoom around to your heart's content or use the arrows as previously to get the zoom to snap to the size of the screen. I like it a lot!

If I hadn't gone for the Droid last November, I would likely have been one of those standing in line for an iPad. As it is, I like my Droid and all it does.

Nice upgrade and the price was right (free!).

I have not even looked at the ipad, don't have time, but I just got a att droid phone. Very happy with it so far except one thing, Att decided not to allow Goggle Mobile as a search engine. They went with yahoo instead.

If you have not seen goggle mobile in actions it is really neat. You just talk to the phone and it does a goggle search of what every you ask. Example> Say Pizza in to the phone and it gives you a list of all the pizza joints i the local area, because it knows where you are. Then pick one and directions and the phone switches to Google map with voice directions, like my garmen, and leads you there. Now you don't need to buy a gps for car. A co worker has it on his verizon phone. Why att did not want this is beyond me.

Now I heard there is a work around but dammed if I can figure it out. Once it is installed I will be set. The apps for my realty work are just great. The Zillo app alone is magic except that zillos price quotes are always off by 30 k.

So the first question is if the Verizon phone has the Google mobile then why did I not get that phone. Well you cannot talk and use internet or internet based apps at the same time with Verizon and I need to be able to do that so I can answer questions while I am talking on the phone to a client.

If I can get the goggle mobile to work then I will have the perfect phone.

Looks like it was firmware v. 2.1.

And back on topic: we stopped at Best Buy today and looked at the iPad. I was impressed, Joan not so much. What it did, it did well. Bright crisp screen. Reasonably fast internet on wifi. I don't see one in my immediate future, since I haven't felt the burning need for something between my Droid and my MacBook Pro. Many of the iPhone apps look pixel-ly (probably not a word) when enlarged to 2x, but I'm sure there will updates to make those native on the iPad very soon. Lots of options with that device.

Slightly off topic, but Jim did you get your Droid update to 2.1 today. I did, now I can pinch zoom which seemed to be a big deal to my son-in-law.

Why anyone would buy such a locked-down device is beyond me, but whatever floats your boat...

For those of you loving your Android phones - here's something that should get you a wee bit excited.

I've made it pretty clear I'm not a gadget/smartphone kinda guy, but I can actually see a lot of use for this. Unfettered by the likes of Apple's iron-fisted control over the iPad, I can see this device gaining tons of developer acceptance - and I wouldn't feel guilty about using it, as I do with my Macs.
 
On a sailing forum, I heard from Shaun at Navionics regarding an app for the Droid...

Jim, I am Navionics' Product Manager for the Americas, Thanks for your interest. The info you have is correct, Droid is coming ... sit tight

Also, just wanted to point out the app now supports overlays with Google Imagery and Bing so it is as useful on land as it is in the water. That update is free to existing users and all apps going forward will support this.

Also, you mentioned a cartography difference between Platinum and the iPhone app. To be honest, there is no difference at all. The charts are the same information albeit in a different format. There is no change in quality. Begs the question, why is the app $15 when Platinum is $199? Because the app cannot do 3D, Pano Photos, Coast Pilots, and other features but the mapping is the same.

I should also point out, never versions of the app will allow you to report POI. In general, we have been adding new POI (shops, restaurants, marinas, launch ramps etc.) with every release (chips and Mobile) but only by our own efforts. Now you can add your own authorship to the map by reporting your own favorite places to visit which can only make all Navionics mapping more fun to use.
