SO WHAT DID YOU DO WITH OR ON YOUR C-DORY TODAY??

Harvey, missed you when we visited Roger and Janet and my classmate Bob Lakshas in Sequim last Wednesday! Great lunch at the Oak Table!

HI Pat,

Sorry I missed that. On a weekday, my lunch is at the hospital Cafe. Glad you are enjoying the fruits of your labors. By the way, Bob just did my boat inspection and asked me to pass the greeting back to you, so here it is. He is a great guy and did a good thorough VSC.

I am at the computer dodging raindrops as we have a nice little thunder bumper moving through. I was outside cleaning my boat cover. Interesting in that there is so much caked on pollen, dirt and what ever that it is taking a power washer to get the grunge out. I bit of spraying, and it's turning red again.

Once done, I am going to have to apply some 303 to get the UV and water resistance back. Does anyone have a good source for larger quantities? A couple of spray cans isn't going to do the job...

Thanks in advance...

Steve

Cheating slightly, as this was yesterday, but I removed a bunch of hardware. Since I'm going to have the v-berth "sealed off" while I install the windlass (dust) anyway, I figured now is the time.

So, I removed the bow cleat, the bow pulpit, the two 'midships cleats, and started on the deck pipe and the forehatch. All core completely unprotected (raw balsa), and all fitting "lightly bedded" in silicone :amgry Nothing like making a job ten times harder than it need be. In a few places on my boat someone "mistakenly" used polysulfide instead of silicone, and it's like a dream in comparison: Remove fitting, wipe clean with mineral spirits on a rag, proceed. Instead of fighting with silicone for hours (and never really being able to get rid of the contamination completely). Yes, it's aggravating! Okay, got that out of my system for now :D

Anyway, good news is, the core is dry as a bone. Of course the boat has been indoors most of its life, and used in dry places when outdoors (Powell). So it wasn't "taxed" at all. I'll overdrill/fill it all before reinstalling.

There were also no backing plates, just medium sized fender washers. In a couple of places on the bow pulpit these had been tightened to the point of causing a depression and some stress cracks in the fiberglass (belowdecks). The epoxy annuli will prevent crushing, but I may add backing plates as well (certainly on the cleats; maybe just bigger fender washers on the pulpit... haven't decided yet. Either way that will take care of the dented area.

The (pointy) screws on the forehatch were not all very tight, so that's not reassuring (of course they are going into balsa, so how tight can they be). But the hatch is still bonded in place, and I'm a bit nervous about potentially bending it trying to get it out (there is a caulk bead on the inside I have yet to cut). I'm tempted to just epoxy the screw holes, but then it seems almost everyone who has removed the hatch on a more "seasoned" boat has found wet core, so I will probably just bite the bullet and proceed with removing it. The deck pipe is similar (loosish screws, but still bonded in with inside caulking), but I'm not afraid of bending that. I thought about eliminating it since I will have the windlass, but I think it might come in handy that I can reach right int to the bottom of the locker that way (to rearrange chain or what have you).

One last note is that the fender washers and nuts on the inside were also "sealed" with silicone. I don't like this method, as then it could "silently leak" and the easiest place for water to go is the core. So I'll do the opposite approach: Seal the core and not seal the below decks fasteners. Then if there is a leak I will know about it and can re-bed (and the core is protected).

Man, that foredeck is *little* without the bow pulpit in place! Even though I wasn't hanging onto it before, it's amazing how pulpit, lifelines, etc. give you visual reassurance. I'm stepping carefully now.

Cleaned the inside top to bottom with bleach. Removed the old name and used a cut wax to eliminate the oxidation on the colored areas. And generally messed around on it. She is clean in every nook and cranny. Just need to get her on blocks to strip the bottom and repaint.

Worked on boat cover to accommodate the radar pedestal and loud hailer. Cut new Sunbrella for a "barrel" over the radar, and cut slit and area for the base of the pedestal and loud hailer/fog horn in the several year old cover. We had washed it a few weeks ago, and will treat it with 303 for fabric after the project is completed.

Also started on a windlass cover. This will not only protect the windlass, but also prevent any water from coming in around the chain. The windlass cover is basically one piece with a draw string around the bottom, and velcro and a tie around the chain, so even stuffing the bow, will not cause any significant amount of water to get below.

Solo to Poulsbo for the 3rd of July fireworks. Met with two of my brothers, spent the night and did some crabbing. Ran into Greg, Cindy and Aven too! They snuck on me all stealth, with that electric outboard!!!

Went out halibut fishing today with just my wife. No company, or friends or acquaintances etc. Just her & I.
Great day, warm, sunny, no wind and damn the luck only 3 halibut. But.....if you go fishing for the catching only you went for the wrong reason.

The C-Dory has been "ginning along" perfectly so far this year.

My water pressure gauge, what is it for, does not work correctly. So I ordered a new one just because I could. Waiting for the mail.
Have a good summer............

We got 12 halibut two days in a row before that with 6 fishing.

Life is good........
Down here in WA our entire coastal hali season is 4 days. Thurs and a Sat. and then again the next Thurs and Sat. unless the quota isn't caught (it almost always is). We're allowed one per person per day max. So your two days is a whole season for us! (*jealous)

In the south sound you are lucky to see a salmon caught on another boat, much less catch anything of interest yourself!

unless you like dogfish. i'm the big man on campus with sharks. lol

after a long weekend in the SJ's and 100 gallons of fuel, I changed the oil and filters along with drain and replace the lower lube on both motors. Two gallons of oil for the main 225hp honda.

My son is visiting and we spent the day on the water watching the Blue Angel beach show. We did see Joway II. This is a Tom Cat 24 which was owned by my neighbor Wayne Barr. His son Bruce bought the boat from his estate. They left before we had a chance to say "hi".

On the way out we picked up fuel at Holiday Harbor; a person on an Island Packet came trotting over, and expressed his admiration for the C Dory--he was interested in buying a Marinaut from Les Lampson. When he saw the "Thisaway" name, there was question about what happened to "Thataway".
Was I Bob Austin? Hopefully he will join the fold soon!

Saturday I wanted a freshwater dunk before next weekends San Juan trip. finalize boat stuff, keep her clean and an opportunity to get the kids out. Took my wife, son, her friend and her son. We motored from the state park at Sammamish to the other side, dropped anchor at Idlewood, swam in to the kids park to play for an hour, then swam back for lunch in the cabin. perfect Saturday afternoon.

Had a chance to install some new Garmin nav gear and remove the Lowrance HDS5. We were not happy with the built-in or navionics charts on that unit and wanted to add RADAR and gain some other functionality as well. We tried to wait till next winter but it just annoyed us too much.

I put in a Garmin 741xs with downvu transducer and a xHD 18 radome. I added the latest software and plugged in the vision map card we have grown fond of. I then tested the wireless display/control Garmin Helm app on my phone and a tablet and am very impressed with it. More details when we get out on the water.

Al and Karen on Cape Cruiser Harmony out of Oregon pulled into Westview (powell river) yesterday and we've been visiting and doing some re provisioning. Yesterday we had some wind and torrential rain into the evening. We have not seen Al and Karen since last years Sidney CBGT. They're planning on the Broughton's while we head for Desolation Sound. Nice to have friends cruise in. George
