Yesterday replaced Ray 54 VHF with a Standard Horizon GX2200 Matrix AIS with GPS White. Networked together with my Lowrance HDS-9. Now I get AIS targets on the Lowrance. Trying to keep up with Harvey on the VHF frontier

Very cool, I think you can set up proximity alerts? We just installed a GX1500 but I just set up an alert for used GX2200's that a feature worth having.

Just back from 40 days up the length of Vancouver Island on it's east side with time in the Broughtons and Discovery coast. I spent probably 24 hours in zero visibility conditions, (That would be seeing less than about 100 feet.) the combination of multiple VHF radios, active AIS - B and radar are a Godsend, and IF you are boating in the PNW, FOG will be a factor. Being able to listen on 16 and 71 (the Vessel Traffic channel for the area) and have an active Fog Horn with amplified listen back all working at once make working in the fog an acceptable and doable challenge.

Dwight, hope you still have that Ray54. Put it (back) in and use it for your talk radio, while SH will listen on 16 and work the fog horn and listen back.

(Interestingly, I found that the Standard Horizon will not power the hailer horn as loudly as my old Raymarine 218, but the listen back feature on the Standard Horizon has a better "listen back" amplifier. Go figure.) Also, the Standard Horizon cannot be used for VHF communication when is the Foghorn mode SO you need something to talk on to avoid having to go through the fog horn start series every time you use the fog horn.

Nice and clean! You wouldn't imagine how much of a rats nest of wiring we have. Was the lighting for compass OEM or did you add it? I don't think ours has a light, but I'm going to looks to see if we can add this feature. How did you access the filler hoses? We may have this problem on our 25

The compass lighting appears to be OE. It's a Richey compass and the small red LED is in a hood that can pivot over the top of the compass.

The fuel fill hoses were super easy to change out on my 22. The tanks are fully exposed under the splash well, so that end is easy enough to get at. The starboard fuel filler end was accessed thru the lazerette and the port side (the most difficult of the four but still easy) was accessed just reaching up under the gunnel.

Man, you just really have to appreciate how these boats where designed. They're SOOOO easy to work on.

I'm slowly getting rid of the oxidation on the boat (light wet sand, compound, polish, then a polymer sealant I use on my truck) so, to make things a little easier, I pulled all the teak today. While I had it off I went ahead and sanded it all and applied 3 coats of teak oil. MUCH nicer!

Also put on some vinyl registration numbers making her an official AZ boat.

Thanks for posting my pic Harvey!!

Today I played hooky and burned 8 hours of my 2000 hours of sick leave, shhhhhhh, and managed to get the cabin top wet-sanded and buffed. Also got the teak bits put back on and sanded, oiled the last two pieces.

Getting stuff done a little bit at a time. Bonus! It was only in the mid 90's today!!

Edit: OH!!! Almost forgot! I managed to fall off the side of the boat while wet sanding and landed flat on my back on the ground below. Even put a pretty good scrap on my arm on the way down.

Funny how, when you know you're going, you reach for handrails that aren't there.

It was a hot and humid day when we went diving on Sunday. I geared up faster than Merry so I jumped in the water first. I dropped down to the reef, only to find three feet of visibility. I ascended as fast as I safely could and stopped Merry just before she was about to jump in.

We got out of our drysuits, our undergarments soaked from sweat. If I knew conditions were going to be that bad, we wouldn't have gone out. So, I just ordered a fish cam. It has a nine inch monitor with 1080P video, 165 feet of cable, LED lights and a DVR to record video. We will now drop the camera first before getting in our drysuits.

What grit are you using for wet sanding. I've been using Turtle Wax Polishing Compound, but it doesn't seem to be aggressive enough. It takes forever to get a "kind of" nice finish.

Hi Mark,
I've been starting with 1000, then 2000 then wash everything off when I'm done.

After that I've been buffing with Marine 31 Gel Coat Heavy-Cut Cleaner Wax with my Porter Cable DA (I was using a rotary but the DA seems to work just fine, especially in the tighter areas) with either a yellow or orange cutting pad. I've had no prior experience with the Marine 31 (my fishing boat is aluminum) product but it seems to work pretty well.

Once I'm done doing that I wipe everything down with Renny Doyle Double Black Bead Maker. I started using this stuff on our vehicles about a year ago and absolutely love it. I put it on like a detail spray after washing the vehicle. I get it by the gallon from AutoGeek and I usually wait for a 25% w/Free shipping coupon to show up in my email.

The range was closed today, so I pulled Pocket Yacht out of the water for cleaning and bottom paint. Whew! Was she stinky. :smileo

Gave her a light wash down and tomorrow I'll fire up, "Killer", my shoulder wrenching pressure washer. :crook

Yesterday decided to change the complete water pump on my 2007 Mercury 115HP EFI 4-Stroke. Usually, unless needed sooner, I change out the water pump impeller and cover every two years. This time I decided it was due to have the bottom of the water pump replaced as well. Fairly simple job. And while I had the lower unit off, since the Shift Shaft bushing was looking a little worn, I replaced that also. Again, a fairly simple job. The last two years I've had occasions where the starter motor would not engage unless I hit the switch a few times. Voltage and connections are good. Doesn't seem to matter if outboard is cold or warm. Finally decided to order a complete new starter motor (includes solanoid). Once that gets here, it'll be the next install. And hoping that fixes that issue.
Also installing a screen on the main entry door. I made a few filler blocks around the door jam/frame, and then installed the velcro that came with the screen. Rosanne sewed the screen up to size. I'll try to include some photos in Midnight Flyer's photo album later.

Pocket Yacht is back on the dollies with help from my Son-in-law and yesterday she got her bottom painted. :thup

Supposed to rain today, so I'll have to to wait to paint where the dolly pads were. :sad

Hope to be back on the trailer by the weekend. Then into the water. :wink

Had an unused hole at the back of my console that made a great place to add a dual USB charge port. I wired it to an unused circuit on the switch panel.

I also changed out the anchor light and interior lights to LED.

We've had a plankton bloom in our area for most of the year. It usually lasts through the Spring and early Summer. On many occasions, we have anchored, gotten into our dry suits and heavy scuba gear only to abort the dive once we reach the bottom. Last week, I bought a drop camera with 165 feet of cable and a nine inch monitor. We now check out the visibility before we gear up. The water is still green and visibility is not great, but at least we have an option now.

We've had a plankton bloom in our area for most of the year.

Is the plankton bloom only along the coastal waters from MDR to the PV Peninsula, or further up and down the coast? How about in the Channel Islands including Catalina?

What has the water temperature been?

I rarely dove the coastal waters, but don't ever remember seeing a bloom, except in the warmer inner harbors where the Marinas were.

It's been heaviest nearshore, but even the Channel Islands have had less than twenty feet visibility several weeks this year. The sea surface temperature around Palos Verdes has been in the upper 60s, with thermoclines as shallow as ten feet. I'm hoping it cools off soon.
My 15mm fisheye lens makes it look better than it really is. Those Giant Sea Bass shots were taken within less than a foot from the fish.
