Smart Tabs

The majority of us think that perhaps in some inflatables or a boat which has a hook they may be of some value; but for any boat which you want to trim, the real activated trim tabs are superior.

I initially got a Permatrim and was fairly unhappy with the results. A $25 plastic fin would have worked as well as the $110 Permatrim. However, when I put the Bennet trim tabs on, I was thrilled. The use of both was the key for me. If I recall, the Smart Tabs were preset. The hydraulic tabs work better for offset loads, side winds, and varying water conditions. Better than moving the cooler around. I have some pics in my album in the mods folder.

From my experience they are not that smart . Permatrim is a better solution for a 16 IMHO.

I agree with Marc. They seem to me to be a solution for boats with an inherent problem. There are many threads about Smart Tabs on iBoats.

To differentiate: the Smart trim tabs are preset--with a hyraulic or pneumatic type of ram/shock. They cannot be adjusted, and will give the amount of correction of trim based on the speed of the boat (pressure of the water agains the resistance of the ram).

The Bennett/Boat Leveler trim tabs are hydraulic and adjustable as to the amount of trim from the helm. Lenco are electric with a sprial type of gear on a screw thread to accentuate the tab.

Permatrims are enlarged aluminum plates which bolt to the cavitation plate of the engine, and will accentuate the trim of the engine, but does nothing for side to side trim (weight distribution in the boat, seas condition or wind against the boat will not be compensated for in a side to side fashion).

Many boats will benefit from both the Permatrim and the adjustable trim tabs.
