Slips/Moorage in Portland Oregon

We are going to be moving the boat to a permanent moorage in Portland and I am starting to look at slips/moorage. Any recommendations/suggestions and any I should absolutely stay away from?

Tomahawk Bay and Haden Island are both popular, but you do have the island, bridge, traffic to deal with. These are both on the Columbia, there are several spots on the Willamette also.
What do you plan on doing? this makes a difference on where you might want to stay.
There is also Ducks and Big Eddies moorages to consider.

The two main marina areas are near Hayden Island (both on the island and on the "mainland") and the upper end of the Multnomah channel. You'll find the majority of the marinas in these two areas. In general, Hayden Island area has the more popular and upscale marinas, i.e., more expensive.

There are certainly other marinas scattered around the Portland area on the Columbia and Willamette. But before mentioning them, you need to decide:

-Where do you plan on cruising (or fishing) most?

-How far are you willing drive or how long of a commute are you willing to endure to get to your boat? Ex., if your marina is actually on Hayden Island and you want to get to it on a Friday after work.....traffic will make the process of getting to your boat miserable.

-Do you want covered, uncovered, or dry storage?

-How often do you plan on putting your boat on a trailer? If the your marina is not convenient to a boat ramp, it makes the logistics a bit trickier. Some marinas are within walking distance to a launch.

If you can answer some of these questions, it will help in determining which marina might work best for you.

I live 12 miles south of Portland so Hayden Island is not very convenient for me. I had a lot of work to do to my boat the first year I owned it so I wanted it close by. I chose to keep my boat at Sportcraft Landing in Oregon City. It's inexpensive ($166/mo, no charge for electric hookup), 9 miles from my house, covered, right next to a boat ramp, and has a fuel dock. On the negative side, it's in a fairly bad state of disrepair and nothing that will impress your friends or family. I'll most likely be moving my boat from there to Tyee Yacht club near Hayden Island now that I don't need to work on the boat every week.

I used Tomahawk Island marina for ten years but now am at Hayden Bay. Like Jerry and Rob said the traffic getting to Hayden Island (Jantzen Beach) can problematic. A slip on Marine Drive east of Salty's would eliminate that. As with most things you get what you pay for.

I've been scoping out most of these over the weekend. Things definitely get more reasonable in price the further you move up or down river. At this juncture we are looking at stuff a bit further West.... Rocky Point and McCuddys Landing.

I thought about Tomahawk Island, but can't get ahold of anybody there same with Ducks.

I spoke with somebody at Big Eddies, but getting calls back from some of these people is ridiculous taking round after round of calls to get through to somebody.

Sportcraft Landing must be the old location of Sportcraft Marine. I've heard it is in pretty bad shape.

I'm in the Salem area, but most of our boating will be further up on the Columbia so I don't really want to have her that much further up river even if it is closer to me. I have spent most of my summer with the boat on the hard getting her squared away, but finding a decent moorage that doesn't break that bank is just as time consuming as anything else!

Since you are all in the area... is there a goto canvas place?

That's the one. And you've heard correctly. Unfortunately, there aren't many options for covered moorage on the lower Willamette. Only Sportcraft Landing and the private moorages at Waverly Marina near the Sellwood bridge. Sportcraft is also the only public spot for fuel on the lower Willamette. The other fuel docks have closed down over the years. Multnomah Channel is the first place for fuel after Sportcraft Landing.

Good luck on the hunt.
