Skagit Orca Alternative to C-Dory?

I found this ad below on Craig's List for a 2004 Skagit Orca 26'8" Extended Cabin Sportfishing Boat for $103,400.

If some of you don't know, the Skagit Orca line is made by the C-Dory Group and is a High End boat with outstanding fit and finish. You can see them at the Seattle Boat Show this January, and view their part of the C-Dory Group website HERE.

I'd have to see this boat personally, but if iI was in the market for a CD-25 or TomCat 255, I'd certainly consider this boat as an alternative. I don't know how well this Sportfisher would do as a cruiser, that would have to be determined in the examination and comparisons. Incidentally, it's a deep-v hull, not nearly as shallow as a C-Dory. This 27 footer weighs 6000 lbs without motors or any optional equipment.

Dusty has owned Skagit Orcas (along with everything else except the battleship USS Missouri), and he could give us some excellent insights here.

I know it's not a C-Dory, but it intrigues me, and I can't help but want to list it here to generate some interesting conversation.

Beam 8'6"
Extended Cabin
This is the ultimate in a serious, no nonsense, sportfishing boat.
Every option imagineable.

The boat is apparently in Elk Grove, just below Sacramento, Ca.

What do you think it costs new? $150-$175k?

Merry Christmas!

Joe. :thup :teeth :xlol

Joe,

That's a great boat at a great price (condition??). It should pass everything but the fuel dock. Heavy, very well built (I can almost see the original plant from my deck.

Only Joe can afford the 18-wheeler tow vehicle.

C-Dory built mine, but the work crew was the original Skagit Orca gang. So many man-hours in that rascal that Bill Gates would shudder.

Have a :xlol :xlol Christmas!

Dusty

Joe,
There's a 2004, 27', for $94,000 on the Seattle Craigslist if you are interested. Probably be a few more as the price of gas rises. Nice boat with a smooth ride.

I'd never knock the Orca. BUT, load that rascal with full fuel, all the fishing gear (it's an offshore fishing machine), 5 or 6 guys, and Wow! Like any deep-V, the entire transition speeds from hull speed to plane -- nada. And at 18-20 knots or so, y'ain't sipping fuel. I had dreams of 1.0 nautical mpg -- still dreaming. Built like a tank tho.

Dusty -- go Hawks!

For years I dreamed of eventually purchasing a Skagit Orca. I climbed all over them at boat shows, pored over the literature, all the dealers knew me, etc. If you want a deep vee in this size range the Orca would be right at the top of my list. My wife liked the look of the 22 C-Dory better, and neighbors at our Summer home raved about theirs and gave us a test drive. The C-Dory won out (wife felt comfortable running it and I wanted her "buy-in" to spending the $$) and I would never go back to a deep vee now. In fact, when I'm ready to move up I'll be looking at the Rosborough 25, which Les has tested out at 4MPG with twin 115 Yamaha's. I just don't need to do 35MPH anymore. Merry Christmas to everyone! Mike.

Gorgeous boat. I also like the Suzuki 4 stroke outboard powerplants. I prefer the raked back look of the Skagit Orca windshields to the Swept forward/trawler look of the Seasports... but those are also very nice boats. The rear helm is a must for serious fishermen. These two, and the C Dory 25 Cruiser and 24 Tomcat are what I am mulling over switching to from my 23 ft. hard topped aluminum Thunderjet inboard about 23 hours a day now. My wife is also serious, wanting something with a bigger bed, a dinette, a galley and so we are now listing our recreational property, 16 acres in S.W. WA in Wahkiukum Co. with a 1/2 mile of Grays riverfront up for sale to fund this transition as well as help put the older son in college.

Boats,
gotta love 'em.

I considered and looked at both before I decided on the Tomcat.

The Parker is a very popular East Coast fishing/diving boat. In a nutshell they are more spartan than our C-dories. I don't recall if the 27' Parker offers a head...none offered a shower from my recollection and most offered just the porta-potti.

The Orca was very nice (I looked at the Orca 24 XLC). The v-berth was smaller than the C-25 (and certainly the Tomcat) and that put me off. The Orca 24 did not come close to the cockpit or storage space or "feel" of the Tomcat. I did not look at it with a fine tooth comb, but it was a well made vessel that offers A LOT for 24', but space wise felt too cramp in comparison to the C-25 or Tomcat.

The C-Dories are the only boats of their size (other than aluminum, such as the Hewescraft) that provide enough room behind the helm for a big guy such as myself. I really had to squeeze to get behind the wheels of the Orca, SeaSport, etc. until we got up to the 30'+ range.
