Sidney to Vancouver?

I am sure that many of my local friends have made the trip over to Vancouver from the Victoria area, particularly from Sidney. I have yet to do this one but was thinking about an early Spring run. (Not the salmon  ). I have run all over the Gulf and San Juan Islands and my inclination would be to stay inside up to Porlier Pass and then run across to English Bay. Good choice? Any better suggestions or comments on things to watch out for?

Many thanks

A good place is Porlier to cross GS, or if lumpy keep on till Gabriola pass seas beam on in NW or SE that way, done it lots in sail. Avoid the temptation to cross too early unless a really GREAT forecast, as Sandheads will kick your Okole if you let it. I give Vancouver a huge miss now though so just be sure you have moorage reserved, not cruiser friendly yet as a rule. Granville Island is a fun thing if you like Zoo's and the Maritime Museum is good, the rest....? Maybe not

I come from Mayne Island to the mainland often. Almost always its been rougher water on the mainland side of the Strait. I sometimes fish the mouth of the fraser if conditions are right, but if going to Vancouver I would definitely avoid that whole area just to be safe. It can be nice but especially if NW blows against the flow it can very awful. Best to keep North of that

I am more familiar with crossing just south of Point Roberts as I am traveling to either Blaine or Crescent Beach.
To me the general conditions of the strait are more important than the exact path you choose. I have also noticed early in the morning and late evening it tends to be smoother than mid-day I am guessing up Trincomalli channel, thru Porlier Pass and then a direct route to Vancouver would work for me-- but like I said I live on the wind and wave reports and would carefully pick my time Remember the boat will have to problem but you want it to be fun for you and your guest too. Once in False Creek you can anchor out for virtually free in the sheltered waters by the science world. You just need to get a 3 day permit
