Shrink wrap

I looked into doing this to my previous boat, to keep the snow out (in Utah.) I discovered that you could buy the equipment and supplies to do several years worth for the price of having someone do it once. However, on some boats you have to construct a wood framework to tent up the shrinkwrap so it won't collapse & pool under the snow. That can be a significant amount of work, to engineer it correctly. I moved out of snow country before I actually did it, but I thought it was a good idea if you don't have covered storage.

My C Dory 25 was shrink wraped at least 2 seasons--and then not shrink wraped for 2 seasons. During the non shrink wrap peroid significant damage was done to the cockpit deck--water and ice got into the core--froze and then melted agan--weight of snow etc. At least for the 25, I would think that shrink wrapping would be essential.

The other option would be a good cockpit cover, which would handle the snow load. I would agree with Warren, that probably you would need a framework if there was much snow. The cabin and deck of the C Dory 22 seem to be fairly weather tight--but not sure how it would hold up to a heavy snow load.

Oh boy...I know winter is coming but I'm not giving up yet! Ha ha, I will no doubt be asking questions about ideas for preparing the Tomcat for the winter. My loose plan right now is to build a frame and carefully secure a giant tarp over it and store it at the house. The most difficult part will be the top of my GPS/radar.

Hey Matt, I used a plastic trash can (33 gal) over the top of the radome and under the tarp one year. The next year, I gave up and built a garage!

Great idea! Thanks

If you cut a 2x4 to fit between the top (bottom actually) of that garbage can and the very front of the bow rail, when you put the tarp on it makes a very nice tent that will shed most snow here in Alaska. What does not slide is swept off by my loving Alaskan wife!
