Many C-Dory owners live along the west coast, where large earthquakes have been a regular occurence through the geologic past. With the thought that an ounce of preparation might save lives, we thought you folks in the pub might like to share some recent information from geologists and others.

Some personal background: when we lived in So. Nevada, where large scale earthquakes were much less a hazard than in the coastal region to the west, I helped design a preparedness drill with local agencies. A major part of that drill was in anticipation of a large quake in So. CA and the sudden presence of thousands of destitute evacuees in southern Nevada. Local folks and agencies felt more confident after that drill.

Some geological background: A large earthquake, at least 7.8 magnitude, has occurred south of the San Gabriel Mtns. in CA every 150 years. The last big one was over 300 years ago (1680, about 100 years before Los Angeles was founded). A geologic disaster is long overdue, especially in southern CA. Seismologists are putting numbers on their prediction: over a 99% chance of a 7.0 or larger in the next 30 years.

Last week, California held a preparedness drill (Great So. California ShakeOut) and over 5 million people took part, the largest ever held in the US. Schools, hospitals and staff working in public buildings all responded to the simulated tremor at exactly the same time.

Children donned fake blood to act as victims, while fire-fighters with chainsaws and rescue gear rushed to the scene of a burning building with artificial smoke billowing from its windows.

Perhaps some in the pub were part of that drill and would share what they learned with us.

In the meantime, these sites have US Geol. Survey presentations created for last week's ShakeOut drill. The information should be helpful for all of us in preparedness (and there are links to more information):
