Server Update - Part Two

10:24 Central Time 10/26/07. Besides the slow down, I had to log-in to the site; it's hard for us old guys to remember things like passwords... and our names. And then any photo activity for the past few days wasn't showing on the home page. On a MacBook Pro.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Updates on the three issues mentioned above:

Performance - I think this is taken care of. Intermittent issues are tough to track down, but I put some monitoring/trending software in place that should help in the future.

In fact, right after installing this software, another slowdown started. I caught this culprit, who may have been responsible for the earlier slowdowns. This particular "user" was generating about 50 page hits per second. I manually banned the IP from accessing the server, which got things back to normal. Since the "whack-a-mole" approach is not ideal, I added another automated ban process that looks for these types of automated accesses...hopefully, this will prevent similar abuses in the future.

Front page album updates - as mentioned in another thread - this has been fixed. There's an automated job that updates the 'Most Recent Photos" block on the home page, that failed to make the transition to the new server. It's running again, updates occur hourly.

Failure to remember signon info - is this happening to everyone? I manually login each time, so it's not something I would notice.

Has never happened to me, but maybe my browser is remembering my login info, not your server.

Hi Bill,

Only happened this morning - all is normal this afternoon. Thanks again for all you do to make this place so great.

Best wishes,
Jim

Usually, intermittent browser issues like this are something on the client side. It's possible the server upgrade could have caused this, but I'm guessing many others would have reported it if that were the case.

If the problem returns, it's likely a cookie issue with your browser - you might try clearing them if it happens again.
