Well, Dotty and I were in Ivar's Salmon House this AM, celebrating my 72 birthday by enjoying their wonderful Sunday brunch. So, I'm sitting there overlooking Lake Union and recounting my blessings while Dotty busys herself with a plateful of crabs legs. Going down the blessings list, past family and friends and C-Brats and C-Dory and good health, I come to the realization that this feast is free, as a part of Ivar's Senior discount package. Then I remember this from Jim's Wild Blue Adventure thread:

"I am 55... and I want my discount at Denney's, dammit! We had never thought about Brent as being old, even though he flaunted it..."

Naturally I did follow up on it and found that Denneys does not have a senior discount, although they do have a senior menu. Just looking thrugh my wallet I found the following genuine senior discounts:

1. Ivars "Carte Clam"- good for 10% at any Ivars or Kidd Valloy. Also automatic specials like the aformentioned birthday dinner (worth $20). Get application at any Ivars.

2.Regional Reduced Fare Permit- Ride any public transit bus in King, Pierce, Kitsap and Skagit for 50cents any time. Also reduced ferry trips.

3. Fishing license- Combination $6.02

Lots of buffets including Old Country and Golden Corral

Even the fastfood places give senior discounts if you ask. If anyone knows of others, please list them here.
 
The Golden Access Passport is a pretty good deal it allows free admission to any National Park for you and your guests. You can get one if you are disabled or 65.

I don't know if all do but Hooton Island State Park charges 1/2 price for 65 year olds and disabled so I would assume all Florida State Parks do.

Fishing and Hunting license's are free in Florida for retired and disabled. I don't know if this applies to non-residents.

Around here Denny's food and service is so poor it should be free.
 
8 years ago (when I was 47), we went through the drive up at Jack-In-The-Box. The young lady took our order, told me the price, then asked me to drive up to the window. When I got there, the price she told me was less than what she said earlier. She said, "I gave you your senior discount."

Joan laughed hysterically. I attributed it to my gray beard and the fact that the child at the window was about 17 years old. I have no doubt that anyone over 30 must look "really old" to her.

Well, that's my justification, anyway. :wink: Yeah, I took the discount... damn little whippersnapper. :roll:

That said, I have no idea who gives senior discounts... I just assumed Denney's did. :mrgreen:

Hey, I got carded when I bought a bottle of wine at Safeway about a month ago. Guess the guy knew my birthday hadn't arrived yet. Kinda helped my "self image" until I caught him and the bagger laughing hysterically after I checked out..

I'd bet his parents taught him to be kind to old people :twisted: ... if only he could have held in the laughing 'till you got out of the building. I used to tell clients, "If you have any special requests, please ask. We promise not to laugh at you until after you leave." :wink:
 
Home Town Buffet, Country Buffet, Old Country Buffet has a "Senior Club" card, costs a buck, lasts a year. All you can eat - surprisingly satisfying. National chain, discount for seniors.

Greybeards around here know precisely when the menu shifts from lunch to dinner and they show up 30 minutes before the changeover to chat until the better (higher priced) dinner items are out. Guaranteed to be a sea of white hair about then....

I once saw a wedding reception held in the back room of a local Home Town Buffet. Then again I have midwest relatives who chose to have their wedding registry at Walmart.... Practical Swedes.

Well all you guys who have ever lost money at the casinos take heart. I have found a way to WIN BIG at Northern Quest Casino in Spokane. A group of retired firefighters goes every Tuesday to Senior day and with the senior day discount the lunch buffet is a whopping $5.91! I can eat more than that in roast beef alone. To make it even sweeter I have never put a penny in their slot machines.
 
Here is one. Duncan Donuts, 10%. Have to ask for it.

Kentucky Fried Chicken. Some sort of Senior discount.

McDonalds. Half priced coffee or drink. You can get a lunch at MacDonalds for less than two bucks. Order off the Dollar menu and get a senior citizen drink.

Remember Charlie and the MBTA. 65 and over. Have to get card. Gives half priced rides. (When I went to get the card at the Hingham MA Senior Center, I met a bunch of friends. I told them I was to young to be there and to cheap not to.)

I have found that many businesses offer some sort of senior discount. You will not get it unless you ask for it.

Fred- I love Dunkin Donuts! Oh man, another east coast gem. Just tell em you want it "big, cream and sugar" and they hand it to you ready to drink. This west cost coffee requires a whole new language, and I'm not talkin' Spanish here.

Re Charlie and the MTA- I remember the Kingston Trio! In fact I've got the 33 rpm album!.

I got unexpected discount at White Castle. The meal should have costed $4.38 which was regular price but the clerk said the price has $4.03 and asked why. She said Senior Discount! loudly in case my hearing was impaired. Free soft drinks at Taco Bell (Taco H__L) in Greenwood for seniors.

Huh?......Even though I'm not Charlie, I did finally get hearing aids a few months ago.....not only did I hear that Sneaks, when I walk on gravel now, I can hear it crunch under my feet....oh, and I can even hear my wife when she talks to me now.... :roll: (except of course when those damn batteries go dead.... :wink

I also have hearing aids. Best thing about them. You can turn them off.

Another thought on being a Senior. Do not mistake the young chicks being nice to you. It is not that you are cool or cute. It is because you are old.

Don't worry Fred, If you just go into a senior assisted/independent living facility to visit someone you'll get all the attention you'll ever want and more. You're vertical and don't use a walker!!!! Prime meat.

Dave, dressed for work, you'd be considered a major "Senior Hottie" there. I think those old ladies have an alert system for old hunks. And the thing about hearing aids, at first it seems like everyone's yelling at you but they're just used to talking loud for "Old Dave who's in denial about his hearing problem." Congrats. The neighbors notice your TV volume is much lower now.

There is a lot of truth in what you say Don. As you can well imagine, in my line of work I frequently get dispatched to the facilities you have described. My much younger partners have a tug of war with the female senior hotties that are trying to forcibly keep me there. Since I started wearing hearing aids, I've discovered that I can hear their hearts racing when I walk into the room.... :crook

(Reckon, I've shoveled enough BS for the day, so guess I'll go back to the recliner and indulge myself in another snooze cruise and dream of my younger days.... :smilep )
