Seattle Visit

Hi everyone!
We will have a one day layover in Seattle on our way to Maui to visit our son in September. We plan on booking an Air BnB room and using Uber and public transport to get around. What would be a good area to book a room and what sights can we take in while we are there?

Seattle is a big town and 1 day is not much time..
Lots of options depending on what interests you. Whenever I have guests from out of town, the only consistent "must-do" everyone wants to do is go to a pot shop to buy legal weed. And the pot shops are just about as common as Starbucks here.

If you want some nautical options, check out Center for Wooden Boats on Lake Union, or you could Ride the Ducks for a water and land tour in amphibious truck, or Argosy Tours from Seattle waterfront. West Seattle has nice beach and about the best view of Seattle skyline. In summer months (including September in Seattle) I enjoy watching boats go through the Ballard Locks especially on busy weekends, and lots of good food / drink and shops in nearby Ballard, Fremont, and Freelard. Many of the boats from Deadliest Catch are moored nearby these neighborhoods on the ship canal (maybe not in Sept?). There are countless more "touristy" options like Pike Place Market, Space Needle, Underground Tour, Aquarium, Museum of Flight, EMP, breweries/wineries, and more, just depends on your interests. With all of that, legal weed is the #1 tourist attraction.

If it's a nice day you can't go wrong with a ferry trip across the sound and back (IMO).

If it were up to me I'd skip Maui and just stay in Seattle.
 
Be within walking distance of the Light Rail, a RapidRide buses (five of them now), or a bus with a 15 minute schedule.
 
As an out-of-towner, I'd recommend Pike Place Market, near the downtown waterfront. We also enjoyed the underground Seattle tour, where they showed how Seattle was built.

Our daughter lives in Denver, so we are familiar with the pot shops. Interesting, for sure.
Ferry ride sounds good. Also public transport and walking around downtown. If it rains, an art museum would be good. Any good art museums in Seattle?
 
Come on get serious rain in Seattle? But on the small chance it does rain the Seattle Art Museum in downtown Seattle is good. Just ask the cabbie to take you to the "SAM"
 
The Queen Anne neighborhood is very nice in itself, and very close to all the major downtown attractions. My mother-in-law rents a room in her (upscale) home on AirBnB which is an incredible bargain at $100 I believe. I'm sure there are many others in the area as well. Nearby are the Seattle Center (Space Needle, EMP), the Pike Place Market, which is right above the waterfront where you can take a fun walk through shops, the aquarium, ferry terminal, restaurants, etc. Broadway on Capital Hill and University Avenue are also lively Seattle walks. You could take in a Mariner's game at Safeco field if they're in town. Rent kayaks at Aqua Verde cafe and kayak Lake Union (Sleepless in Seattle locale) right in the middle of the City. Ballard Locks is fun for boat watching and fish viewing. So much to see and do in this beautiful city: have a great time!
