searching on this site

The part of this discussion that is about how to use the Search function is potentially of great value and could be of immense benefit if it could define how to make the Search function truly do it's job (!)

One problem with this kind of site, is that the same words related to boating and related topics are used all over the place in vastly different topics.

If you want to find out what the C-Dory crowd things about hydrofoils or specifically about Permatrims, putting one or the other of those words in the Search function not only brings up topics that relate the the real question, but also any topic where one or the other of the words is just casually mentioned in the text.

Those large list of threads that are generated by that type of search, sometimes stretching into 10-50 pages with, say, 25 threads on a page, are mind-boggling, especially to newbies to the site. Someone like me, who has read everything ever written here, can sort through them more efficiently.

Another approach that sometimes can really work, is to identify a word or group of words that is unique to the topic you're interested in, and won't just bring up 10,000+ hits, 97% of them irrelevant.

By this approach, you search for "Permatrim and hydrofoil and performance", which will help leave threads with only casual mention of any of the terms out of the search report.

What we need here is someone to step in who understands how to manipulate the search words and operational terms to engineer the search outcomes.

Here is "A Question" by Robert Frost

A voice said, Look me in the stars
And tell me truly, men of earth,
If all the soul-and-body scars
Were not too much to pay for birth
