Sealing around the heater exhaust thruhull

I'm installing a Wallas 1800 furnace in my boat and I'm wondering what others used to seal around the exhaust thruhull on their installs. I've had people tell me that because the thru hull is a duplex, (cold air return out side the centre exhaust), I could just use 3m 4200 as a sealant because the temp next to the hull doesn't get all that hot, just the centre exhaust pipe gets hot and its inside the outer sleeve of the cold air return.
Any thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

Can't help you on the question Ron, but I would be very interested to see some pictures of the installation when you are complete. This is something I could be interested in.

Most folks just use a High Temperature RTV silicone rubber compound available at your local auto parts, RV, or marine dealer. They're designed specifically for that type of application.

I don't know if 5200/4200 and the like are compatible with high temperatures or not. I don't think they'll "fill" the space around the tube as well as the RTV.

Agree with Joe. I installed a 45,000 BTU diesel hydronics system on the Cal 46 we used to cruise Alaska for 3 years. I used the RTV silicone, and had no problems. The hull never got hot. The small Wallas unit should not be a probelm.--just don't put a fender or other item over the exhaust!

Thanks for the tip about the RTV silicone. I just ran out to the local NAPA and picked up a tube.

I used 5200 & the cork gasket that came with the thrugh hull fitting on my stove, after 60 hrs on the stove all is well :mrgreen: :beer
 
im starting to design the interior of my boat, it pretty much has nothing in it right now, im gonna be putting in a wallas stove eventually but i want to build it into the design now, im wondering if anyone has pictures if the whole system, the tank, hoses, exaust, so i can get an idea of a good place for it, and how much space it needs, any info, dimentions or pics would be great, thanks...

Catch 22, I installed a Wallas 1300 Heater, should be similar enough for comparison. Go to my album, I have photos of the installation for a CD25. There are other installs on CD22's. As far as how long does a gallon last, I believe my 1300 uses about 4 oz per hour and if I remember correctly, they estimated about 40 hrs per tank (5 quarts).

The cut out is APROX. 17"X19" (not exact, from my CRS memory)for the stove top :mrgreen: :beer
