screeching when lowering motor

we have developed a high pitched screeching sound when the outboard goes down about midway along, doesn't do it everytime though. we greased the fittings for the steering shaft that is full. was wondering about the trim hydraulics, could that be the problem.. the sound is a metal sound like an old hinge . ???
 
Sounds like air in the hydraulic system for the tilt/trim. If you have a service manual you should be able to find out how to bleed/fill it if it's possible to do it at all.

Does it make any difference if the engine is pointed right/left/center?

Agree it is probably the hydraulic cylinder. When you leave the motor up, do you put the transom support lock on and fully retract the cyliner rams? If not there can be corrosion and salt build up on the cylinder extensions which push the motor up and down--and can lead to those seals wearing. Agree that the system should be bled.--but check the rods for corrosion also.
 
If the spot where you start hearing this racket is closer to 2/3 down than 1/2 down and not so much when going up it is most likely the assist cylinders (or damper cylinders or whatever you call the things with the two rods that slow the tilt travel). The rod ends contact two wear blocks and sometimes those can screech pretty good. When the motor is up a ways the rods just stick out there doing nothing, but when they are engaged for the bottom 1/3 of tilt travel they act as valves in the hydraulic system and slow the travel to give you finer control of the tilt position. If a dab of grease on the rod ends makes the noise quit that will tell you for sure. There is some squealing from those things anyway because of the effect they have on the internal hydraulic pressures.

Bob - Maybe I am misreading your comments, but when my Honda is tilted up with the support in place, the lift cylinder is fully extended and cannot be retracted without lowering the motor back down.

I agree with Tyboo.

Our Suzukis make a horrible screeching noise when going down- exactly like you described. A dab of grease will fix it- but sometimes not for long.

I have learned to ignore it.
 
i already put grease on the tips of the rods because it looked like there had been some there and dried away.. thanx for input, just didn't want to have a big problem happening if i didn't address it
will have to see how it does now.
 
Tyboo--I am not sure what brand engine is involved here--I didn't see it mentioned, nor do I see it on the photos. The only boat I keep in the water has a Yahama 115, and on it at least the side cylinders are fully hyraulic (up and down--double action rams), and fully retract after I lock the engine all of the way up. I am not posititive about the center one. I'll have to look at my Honda 130 and the Suzuki 150's. Either way, this is a potential source of the noise.
