We had our 100 hour mntc performed in the middle of May, and now here we are
again just over another 100 hours. I'm not a mechanical person and don't really
know how much of this maint. is hype or needed. Paid $650 for our last 100, and
will look into ways to save cost by doing some of this myself but what's the
view on closely following the manufacturers recommendations. This is a 2005
Yamaha 115, 4. we rarely run wot, more in the 25-3000rpm range.

I would certainly "closely follow mfrs recommendations". You can do most, if not all of those things yourself, unless it takes special tools. Get yourself the full service manual, the one the shop uses. Read it!

Most of that $650 was labor, look at your bill. You can at least save that much. With the time you've been putting on your boat, you'll save a lot of money. If you get stumped with something, just ask here.

We have the same motor . I check every year the zincs which may or may not have been done also every 500 hrs the valves need to be adjusted or checked the timing belt needs to be replaced between 500-1000 hrs depending on who you talk to .and offcourse the oil filter and oil and ,lower unit oil need to be replaced every year or 100 hours. Also every 2 years change out water pump .We change plugs as needed

I would change oil and filter . and change out lower unit next oil change I have 800 hours on my engine runs great
We run about 1500-2000 rpm slow speed and 3800-4600 cruising.

I would carefully read the owners manual about maintenance. Make sure you understand what the mfg is really recommend for your usage. How did they get to $650. That is somewhat incredible.

The more you use an engine usually less maintenance is required per hour of use. A lot of maintenance is actually yearly maintenance and not hourly as another person said.

If your engine is under warranty, then you should probably go to a dealer, if not go with an honest independent maintenance person or shop.

Also, if the mechanic is not talking to you about what is going on, you need to find another shop. Use your maintenance person as a consultant. A good mechanic will help you understand what needs to be done and when it needs to be done and what you should be on the look out for.

I do virtually all of my own maintenance. Oil and filter changes are easy when you have the right equipment which is generally quite inexpensive. Lower unit oil changes the same way. With modern EFI engines, you should not need to replace or even clean plugs for hundreds of hours.

Good Luck.

I buy Yamaha parts from SIM Yamaha in WI. They have low prices and Yamaha service manuals. Andy provides superb support by email and on their Hull Truth forum

Youtube has lots of videos of wide variety of service topics.
These are very useful for visual learning.

SIM has several very well done service tutorials ontheir web site.
