Santa Barbara Channel Dolphins

journey on

New member
Last week or so we went over to Santa Cruz Isle, across the Santa Barbara Channel. On the way back we passed through several herds of dolphins fishing. There were several schools of them and they were busy. though every once in a while they would break off work and swim alongside Journey On, under over around. Judy got some pics. I thought they were neat enough to post here. And if some ichthyologist wants to define what those ocean dwelling mammals really are, I'd enjoy that.

First, here's the start. Notice they are really next to Journey On.

This group quit fishing and starting swimming with Journey On

Just left of the center, they're doing synchronized jumping.

Still in the middle of the herd. Remember they're mammals.

For the finale. This might be the herd/school we saw in Beechers Bay in Santa Rosa Island a couple of years ago.

Well, I'm no ichthyologist, but for me, they're the passed on sailors, fishermen, and other boaters gone to Heaven, and I hope to join them someday soon.

Should be fun!

Looks like a great show! Those look to be Long-beaked Common Dolphin. Nothing "common" about that experience!

For the record, I am not an ichthyologist (study of fishes), nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night. Just a boat guy who happens to really enjoy those marine mammals.

A special moment there.

WOW, Cool pix. What an experience. Thanks for sharing those. I frequently see dolphin, but usually only a 2 - 5 or 6, and when up in the Broughtons I did hear of several sighting of big herds, pods, flocks or groups, (Yup, heard them called all of those.) but again, usually only saw small groups. Would love to see a pod like that.

BTW Jim,
