Sam's Big Adventure

At the moment (6:00 PM PDT) it looks like he's at Klemtu. If Sam's looking for fuel this evening, I hope there's someone there to help him. In my experience, the fuel dock attendant's lunch and dinner breaks can take a while. On our last stop there, we managed to find a guy who knew which house the attendant was likely to be having lunch in, and also had a phone that worked in Klemtu and got a message to the attendant that he had customers. That was at 2:00 in the afternoon. We only had to wait a couple more hours. :lol: If he doesn't get lucky, he may be there a while. Next likely fuel stop is a ways - probably Harley Bay if he's still trying to take the most direct route to make up for lost time.

Glad to see he got around the cape apparently in good shape! :thup :thup

Is there a scale somewhere on the SPOT map? I'd like to be able to easily measure the distance between beeps, if possible.

I had the same question, Marty. I don't see any way to measure distances, other than just eyeballing it from some other scaled map.

Just noticed a typo in my previous post. It's "Hartley" Bay, not "Harley" Bay, that's the likely next fuel stop. Assuming he get's whatever fuel he needs in a reasonable time, and assuming the weather cooperates, Sam should make Prince Rupert easily tomorrow. And then the Dixon Entrance awaits him - another place, like Cape Caution, where careful attention to the weather is required, and an early morning start is usually the best plan.
 
Wow Sam your moving at a good speed! Next fuel stop is Hartley bay, I was just down at butedale and louis has no fuel. Hope there is time to stop at bishop bay, it's unfortunate to have to race past all the sites. Good luck with the Dixon entrance.
 
Currently in Prince Rupert and probably heading across Dixon Entrance tomorrow early. We didn't need fuel in Klemtu, but we were tired and wanted to stop at a place where we could easily walk around and stretch our legs after the long day. The trip from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert has been spectacularly beautiful but entirely too fast. I'll probably spend a bunch more time in the area on my way back home when I'm not in a rush.

Cape Caution was easy. Hopefully Dixon Entrance will be too. If we get across to Ketchikan tomorrow we'll spend the night there and then head out for Misty Fjords Tuesday.
 
Just passed Wrangell, AK on my way up to Petersburg tomorrow. Will anchor out tonight at the S. end of Wrangell Narrows. Picking up my brother in Petersburg Wednesday morning and then heading for Endicott Arm, Ford's Terror, and Tracy Arm. Juneau by the 27th for my brothers flight back to Seattle, then off to Glacier Bay.

The weather has been pretty decent up here overall and looks like it will get quite a bit warmer later this week. A few rainy and windy days, but most days have had plenty of dry periods, even if they are cloudy. The boat has performed flawlessly.

I haven't seen any other C-Dory's cruising yet, although I did see several 22's and a TomCat at the marinas in Ketchikan. Hoping to cross paths with Jay and JoLee late this week or this weekend.

Thought I'd bump this up to the top since Sam's added about a week's worth of updates today or yesterday. Awesome stuff. I'm still trying to get out of the Locks. :)

After skipping a few days, Sam has now brought his blog up to date. His writing is clear and fluid.His descriptions are a pleasure to read, and his photos certainly appropriate illustrations.

Thanks for the compliments. Currently in Sitka and just brought the blog up-to-date now that I have wifi (free wifi in Sitka!). I've put about 250 hours on the engine since leaving, so the boat is getting pulled out of the water tomorrow morning for engine and lower unit oil changes.

Everything on the boat is performing well!

I enjoyed the latest posts that you made to your blog. Sounds like you got some good weather for your Dad's visit. The pictures of the bears "playing" are amazing. I will be interested in how the prop change works out. Keep the great posts coming.

I'm at our cabin on Decatur Island for a few days. The trip to Alaska was wonderful and I'd love to repeat it...not sure when, though.
