Salmon - B10 and Beyond

That would make somebody a nice boat, I've heard rumors that the previous owner did a little upgrading on it.
Hope to see that Orca in Blakley Saturday night

Thought this might be a good time to bring this back to the top since Bouy 10 opens up this Sunday and I plan on making my first trip to the river for salmon. Not sure what kind of gear to push over the side though since I'm not sure wether a guy should try for chinook or silvers this early. Maybe our resident salmon slayer Raven Dave or brother Chuck of the Heron fame will chime in and help us new kids out.

B~C - You going fishing this weekend? There is a big low tide (-2.0 or so) Saturday at around 7:30 at the bar. Me and another idiot are going to leave Warrenton at 8:00 am and go take a look. If it is settled down, we'll go give it a try outside. Any doubts, though, and we'll not go. I'm not trying to talk you into it; just checking your schedule. If you're around I can return your hose.

Maybe I can even keep up a little better. I got a different prop on the big feller, and I raised the mount up a good inch and a half. She scoots along a lot better.

The kid and I may go down and stick our nose out on Sunday and if the ocean is lumpy we can always drag some dead fish around the river. The mighty predictors are calling for a pretty lumpy ocean. Here's a good site for ocean conditions http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/wrhq/To ... +WR+PZ+255

We went out last Saturday under about the same conditions as are predicted for this weekend, got bounced around pretty good and made fishing no fun so we ran back in before Max ebb. They closed the bar shortly after we came back in. A yahoo a few docks north of us came in over the closed bar, needless to say, he was escorted back to his slip by the Coast Guard and will now be a couple of thousand dollars lighter in the pocket when the court gets done with him.

Don't worry about that hose, we'll catch up with you

Put the boat back in last night so we're wet and ready. My plan is to leave the dock sometime around 6:00 and troll my way down the river. That should have us somewhere around buoy 10 by slack. If the bar looks smooth and we haven't caught fish I may go across but if we have fish or it looks like c__p then we'll troll are way back up with the flood. Don't know if I should drag bait, plastic, or metal though. Any suggestions or do I need to go ask Mark up at Englunds who'll sell me more new stuff.
Where's Raven Dave when we need him?, or better still Grnpa with his wisdom and lawn chair.

The ocean was swell today. In fact, it had plenty of swells. The bar was pretty calm an hour or so after low slack, but lots of up and downs outside.

Didn't do so hot on the fishing. I got one real nice king, only 14-15 pounds, but bright and firm. All the silvers we got to the boat were natives. We figured there was a good chance of not going over the bar this morning, so we didn't buy any fresh bait. I used some frozen stuff from the back of the freezer, and my partner used a couple different spoon gizmos. The second one he tried got several hits and a few natives. Gonna have to bum some hoochie rigs from B~C, I guess.

The boat was cruising faster than it ever has today. The new prop/raised motor combo works great. Slack water at 4500 rpm it cruised 20 smph. WOT was 5700 with two people and 100 gallons of fuel on board.

Probably stay home tomorrow. Got family coming to visit.

Thanks for the fishing report, Mike. Glad to hear you're getting Tyboo dialed in. Don't get rid of that 15 degree prop. I got a feeling that by the time you're done tinkering, that's the one you'll have on it. Have you ran any injector cleaner through it yet? I'm not sure if it would do any good, but might be worth a shot.

Fishing was probably a lot better out there for most folks, although we didn't see that many nets flying. Big swings in water temps today, sometimes 10º in a half mile, it seemed, and the colder spots were small and hard to stay with.

The 15" prop will be a good spare, and with the motor up where yours is it should work a lot better. But I ain't tradin' off my SS job until I hit a log and bend the shaft!

Don't know why I would run injector cleaner through it. Les gave the fuel delivery system an upgrade and gave the whole thing a clean bill of health 80 hours ago. Is that cleaner a preventive measure I should do at regular intervals?

When you coming down this way? Kay has a bag of ducks for Helen, and she can do whatever she wants with them without alarming Homeland Security. Plus, I got your plastic and legs.

Mike, next time I'm down that way I'll throw a lucky hoochie in your boat. I built fence today, yard work tomorrow....next weekend should be a go for fishing. If you ever wish to fish out of a boat with lower floorboards let me know.
Larry, wanna plan on Friday? there's some nice tides for running out (and back in) and the predictions show things tamming down towards the weekend....

Ken, what time and where on Friday? You bet I'll be up for it!

Mike, I'll swing by your boat on Friday and leave that starboard table top in your cockpit.
Regarding the injector cleaner.... I just think you might have a few more horsepower hiding in your engine somewhere. We have the same hull and motor with different props. A few hundred extra pounds doesn't seem to make much difference in a 25'.
I just typed out a long explanation, then dropped my mouse on the floor which somehow managed to delete the whole thing. It's late, I'm tired and might not be making much sense anyhow. Time for bed.

I would like to learn about this Columbia River fisherie and was wonderin if anyone would be willin to let me take an empty seat for a day. or I would be willing to bring the Sensei down there and take someone on her with me to show me the ropes, so to speak, I have a couple of downriggers and one fishing pole that I use up here for silvers and pinks. don't have the slightest Idea what I would need for gear down there.

no problemeo...I started an "open seat" thread where if the ocean looks doable and the kid aint got a full crew booked we'll be letting folks know....late August-early Sept there'll be openings A' plenty.

Any of you downriver galoots want to chime in on that thread feel free to.....lets show them Sounders what CR fishing is about :)

You're welcome on my boat anytime. I'm waiting to get my vhf antana replaced before I go anywhere in it though. Somehow I managed to break it, noticed it when I got home from the San Juans.
I'm no expert on fishing the B10 area like Tyboo, BC and Lynn Marie are, only fished it about a dozen times inside the bar. Outside the bar there I've only fished twice on another boat. If I were going to fish outside I'd like to buddy up with one of the more experienced guys and keep them within seeing distance for the trip. It's just a safety thing. I've had lots of experience crossing the Tillamook bar, but the Columbia demands even more respect. If Ken has a full boat maybe he could play mother hen for us if we go out.
As far a what fishing gear to use: Outside the bar fishing is like a feeding frenzy. I've heard people say that you could tie a herring on backward and catch fish out there. I've also known people that say they have tried it backward and found it true. That's why some many people flock to the area, you can catch them on just about anything. From B10 and inside the fishing can be super hot to just plain average on some days.
So when do you plan on taking a break from work to come on down?

don't lump me in no expert catagory, we have to risk crossing the bar to catch our fish. To give you an idea of how good the fishing is out in the ocean....we can even catch um

Thanks, Adeline. Great pictures of what looks like was a great day for you guys. That's how it looks when I venture out there - otherwise I stay inside.

Here's an example of when to avoid it. This photo was taken back in 1911 from the deck of a steam powered tug towing a sailing vessell over the bar.

did they have digital cameras back then?.
Looks like you folks had a fine day on the pond Pete....that ifish site does contain a wealth of info.
