Sad news, friends. We've lost Sneaks.

Oh, my. Not what I expected to see today. Terrible news...our thoughts are with Don's family and friends.

We were living in Alaska when we bought our boat. The seller lived in San Diego, and the boat was in Lake Tahoe. Don offered his help to us in any way he could. He made us feel good about the purchase by telling us a bit about the seller...well known and a stand up kinda guy. Don even offered to pop on out and have a look at the boat for us.

We'll miss him around here...it won't be quite the same.

Fair winds and following seas to you...

Some people make the C-Brat site special just by being on it and Don was one of those people.

While it only takes a minute to say hello, it takes forever to say goodbye. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal but to live in the hearts of those left behind is not to die.

Seeing death as the end of life is like seeing the horizon as the end of the ocean. Good bye Sneaks, may you rest in peace with your Lord and God.

I should know better than to post while a tad tipsy...but it's been a rough couple of days, and I've been perusing through my 4+ years of email archives, going over many conversations I had with my pal Don.

Hopefully, the following is as amusing and insightful to the those of you reading, as it is to me right now.

The Best of Sneaks

Don and I often chatted about personalities here at the C-Brats. After one of our little ruckuses, we were gossipping like a couple of schoolgirls about certain C-Brats I viewed as misbehaving. I was frustrated with comments that were being made around here, and was venting in his direction. I won't name names, but Don's response:

Shit, Bill, life is too short to be small.

I love short and insightful musings...Don was full of them.

His sense of humor, always caught me by surprise. Being a fellow tech addict, he was always tossing little tidbits like the following my way.

"The new Linux seems to have a core instability, Bill."

Don't spend too much time analyzing the above - it's a nerd thing.

Don was constantly ribbing me about hair loss. The dork didn't have a glimpse of skin on his scalp, and took great joy in sending bald jokes my way. A couple years ago, I was greeted with this in my inbox:

By the way, do you recognize this tattoo?

And finally...I do have one regret about my good friend. He sent the following a couple years back.

"Actually the nickname "sneaks" was conferred by me by a Sysop in the San Diego Sysop Association (SDSA) back in the 1980's. Not only for the shoes I always wear, but for the fact that I pulled a truly magnificent "Gotcha" on him. One that nobody in that long disbanded association will ever forget. One day I hope to tell you about it over a beer."

I never found out the background on his nickname. Like the man, I'm sure it was anything but usual, and nothing if not entertaining.

Dammit, Don - I really miss you.

Been off the computer for a couple of days but when I logged on this morning we are deeply saddened to read the post about Don (Sneaks). We had the pleasure of his company when he attended the Bellingham gathering a few years ago. I knew I'd taken a couple of photos while he was there and finally located them. I'm not at home at the moment so don't have my cheat sheet on how to forward images so if anyone wants to take a look at Don (Sneaks) with Dusty, Les, DaveS and Brock they can be found in the R-MATEY 2007 Bellingham CBGT photo album; photos #7 & 8.

Sad news. Don was one of the most prolific and helpful posters on the board. While I'm sure that he and I didn't agree on everything, he was almost always one of the earliest posters to congratulate me when I shared good news or to wish me well. Perhaps we need to have a "C-Brats Hall of Fame" where we can recognize members when they pass. Don would certainly belong in there.

Yes, sad news indeed. Don's posts were always informative and I also appreciated his boating knowledge. The thing I most remember about Don (besides the fact that Jenny B was the same year as our boat and a unique color) was his tagline:

"Don't own a C-Dory? What a pity." or something to that effect.

We'll miss him on the site. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family.

Nerds, there's a thought. A Hall of Fame would certainly be appropriate. Just a good picture, a link to a thread like this one and a short "blurb" written by someone. Hope to be in there someday but, as the CW song says, "I WANT TO GO TO HEAVEN, BUT I DON'T WANT TO GO TODAY".

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately as I've made some rash wishes in the past, it's not our choice... My signature will stay unchanged until the Hall of Fame gets created.

I didn't know Don well but remember him as a funny and kind man while meeting him at the Bellingham Brat Bash I think in '07.

He's clearly touched a lot of lives and will be missed. I wish his wife and family well during this difficult time.

Friends,

I spoke with Mary today, and she's holding up as well as can be expected.

She sent me an invitation to Don's Memorial service on Saturday, October 23, followed by a gathering at her home in Encinitas, California. Mary has asked that I share the information with all of his C-Brat friends, any of whom are more than welcome to attend.

Details including RSVP instructions are attached.

I sure wish I could come but cannot. I will give to one of his charities though, in his name. I will be there in spirit, for sure and we will remember him during SBS11 in Seattle where I hoped to meet him for the first time and hoist a glass with Dusty and Seawolf Joe.

I never met Don in person, but I remember he always helped out and offered advice when he could. All the best to his wife and family during this tough time.

Robbin and I only met Sneaks once but I always felt a connection with him. We both were ET nucs and we were the only ones that I knew of that had the same wheat color on our 22's.
This site and myself will miss him.

Bill,

Thanks for posting the memorial info. I sure won't be able to make it,but would be more than happy to get a memorial donation to the DAV. Condolences to Mary and family.

Oh My God, that's a great loss. Don/Sneaks was a really nice guy who loved boating and was interested in anything to do with C-Dorys.

A loss to us as well as Mary.
